Missouri Southern's hot shooting down the stretch too much for Lady Miners

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were unable to overcome a strong second half performance by Missouri Southern's Myosha Barnes and Danielle DeVader, who combined to score 29 second half points, in a 75-69 loss at MSSU on Saturday afternoon in Joplin. The Lady Miners shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor and three (7-of-14) but missed five free throws in the second half while the Lions connected on 64 percent (16-of-25) and knocked home 5-of-9 from downtown in the frame for the victory.

The first half was a defensive struggle between the former MIAA foes with neither side shooting the ball very well early on as the teams combined to score just 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Lions (5-0) went on an 11-2 over the next three minutes to build their lead to 18-10 its largest of the game.

S&T (3-2) began to chip away at the deficit getting solid production from Courtney Kemp, Lauren Dubbert and Lydia Karlefors as they scored eight straight points at one point to get within 21-19 at the 5:32 mark. After a Katie McElrath jumper tied the game Dubbert gave S&T its first lead since early in the ball game with a pair of free throws.

Southern would tie the game back up on Nicole Helfrich jumper but the Lady Miners responded by scoring six straight points, including four from Dubbert to take their largest lead of the half at 29-23 with 2:09 to play. The Lions cut the lead in half nearly 0:30 later on Jolea Apon three from the wing but S&T had a chance to push its lead back to six right before the half as McElrath's three at the buzzer rimmed out.

MSSU began the second half strong scoring the first four points of the frame to regain the advantage but Tamara McCaskill knocked home a three to give the advantage back to S&T. After trading baskets over the next couple of minutes the Lady Miners began to assert themselves going on a 15-4 run to build a 49-41 advantage highlighted by a pair of threes from Jenny Dorman with 10:53 left.

After Southern cut it to six, Jazmine Bell buried a three from the top of the key to push the advantage back to nine but Apon came right back with another three to get it back to six. After a rushed three by the Lady Miners, the Lions went on a 7-2 spurt over the next three minutes to regain a 57-56 advantage with 5:28 to play. S&T wouldn't go away though getting a three from McCaskill to regain the lead at 59-57 only 0:11 later.

In the last five minutes it became the Barnes and DeVader show as they combined to score 11 points down the stretch including a pair of three's from DeVader including the go-ahead three at the 2:34 mark. S&T had a chance to tie the game but McElrath missed a jumper and Barnes made it a four point game at 71-67 with 1:43 to play.

The Lady Miners had a chance to tie the game at the foul line but made just 2-of-4 in the final minute and a half while MSSU closed out the contest by making four of its six from the line to seal the deal.

McCaskill led four S&T players in double figures with 18 points. Dubbert finished with 14, (only four in the second half) McElrath had 12 and Bell dropped home 11.

The Lady Miners return home to begin conference play on Thursday night hosting Rockhurst University beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Bullman.

Balanced scoring leads Miners to win over Spartans

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Missouri S&T shot over 50 percent from the field for the first time this season and had a balanced scoring effort to pick up an 87-75 win Friday over Missouri Baptist at the Missouri-St. Louis Thanksgiving Classic.

The Miners had six players in double figures in the contest, led by a double-double by junior center Aaron Redecker. S&T shot 50.8 percent from the field on the night and went a season best six-of-14 from three-point range.

After the teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the contest, the Miners rattled off an 18-4 run to take a 33-19 lead by the 8:24 mark. S&T made six of its eight shots from the floor during that run, including three-points from Aaron Hays and Marquis Jones.

The Miners took a 14-point lead into the locker room and extended it to 21 in the first five minutes of the second half as Justin Taylor's three-pointer gave S&T a 66-45 advantage.

S&T's lead never fell under 10 for the balance of the night.

Redecker posted his first double-double as a Miner with 18 points and 16 rebounds -- both career highs -- while A.J. Mandani finished with 14. Hays added 13 points, while Taylor finished with 11 and Adam Knollmeyer and Jones scored 10 points apiece.

Thanks in large part to Redecker's 16 boards, the Miners (2-1) also enjoyed a huge advantage on the boards as they had 41 rebounds to Missouri Baptist's 27. S&T got 18 of its rebounds on the offensive end and that led to 21 second chance points.

The Spartans (3-3), who got 17 points from Brandon Bishop, shot 48.2 percent from the field in the contest, but hit only two of their 13 three-point tries and just 19-of-29 at the free throw line.

Missouri S&T will face Central Bible Saturday in its second game at UMSL; game time is at 1 p.m.

Lady Miners win wild one over Pittsburg State 78-75

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners survived a wild one in defeating Pittsburg State 78-75 on Friday evening in the Fairfield Inn/Pizza Hut Missouri Southern Thanksgiving Classic in Joplin, Mo. S&T was able to escape with the victory when PSU's three point attempt at the buzzer hit high off the back rim and was controlled by Lauren Dubbert.

The first half was tightly contested with six ties and 16 lead changes in the opening frame and neither side had bigger than a five point advantage. The Lady Miners (3-1) began to take control of the first half with a 6-1 run to take the largest lead of the half 25-20 at the 6:35 mark but the Gorillas (3-2) stormed right back with seven of their own to regain a 27-25 advantage almost a minute later. S&T regained the lead thanks to five straight points from Tamara McCaskill before the teams traded leads over the final three minutes with each team answering point for point. The Gorillas took a 35-32 lead with 1:09 to play in the frame but the Lady Miners scored the final four points of the half to head into the half with a 36-35 lead.

S&T struggled shooting the ball in the opening frame making only 39 percent (12-of-31) from the field but made 10-of-12 (83 percent) at the foul line while the Gorillas were slightly better at 16-of-36 (44 percent) but went to the line only two times (missing both).

The Lady Miners came out of the gates strong in the second half opening on a 14-2 run to build their lead to double digits at 50-37 only five minutes in. Pitt State put in five new players and began pressing S&T allowing the Gorillas to get back in the game and eventually take the lead at 55-54 at the 8:59 mark. The Lady Miners regained the lead thanks to a put back by Brittany Percival and a three pointer by Jazmine Bell to go back up 59-55 but the Gorillas refused to go away answering with seven in a row to grab the lead back at 62-59 with 5:39 to play. After a Katie McElrath jumper tied it at 62-62, PSU retook the lead on a lay-up at the 4:35 mark but S&T regained the lead on an old fashioned three point play from McCaskill made it 65-64 just 0:14 later. Pitt regained a one point lead on a pair of Buchanan free throws at the 3:45 mark setting up a wild final three minutes.

Dubbert banked home a three right in front of the Lady Miner bench at the 3:00 mark sparking an 8-0 run by S&T over the next 1:30 giving it a seven point lead but back-to-back three's from the Gorillas and poor free throw shooting by the Lady Miners allowed PSU to get within 73-72 with 0:49 remaining. After a S&T turnover the Gorillas had a chance to regain the lead but made only 1-of-2 at the foul line to tie the game at 73 with 0:40 left. Jaz Bell dropped in a pair of free throws with 0:19 left allowing S&T to regain the lead at 75-73 but a Laura Glenn lay-up tied the game back up at 75 with just :07 left. On the ensuing possession Bell was fouled and made just 1-of-2 but McElrath grabbed the rebound and knocked home both free tosses to push the lead back to three and then held on after PSU's last chance shot was long.

The Lady Miners turned it over 17 times and were just 12-of-23 at the line in the second half but made 52 percent (14-of-27) from the field to get the win. McCaskill recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead four S&T players in double figures. McElrath also had a double-double with 17 and 13 while Dubbert finished with 12 and Bell had 11.

S&T returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Missouri Southern beginning at 3 p.m.

Miners dominate selections on All-GLFC football team

Missouri S&T won the Great Lakes Football Conference championship in 2008 and the league's all-conference team was a reflection of that, as the Miners had 13 selections to the squad and won six additional awards for their performance.

Of the 13 players named to the All-GLFC team, 10 were first team selections. In addition, Miner head coach Kirby Cannon was selected as the GLFC's "Coach of the Year", senior wide receiver Mike Greaving was named as the league's "Offensive Player of the Year" and he along with five of his teammates were named as the top players at their respective positions.

Six of the Miners' 10 first team picks were on the offensive side of the ball, including three from the offensive line. Senior guard Justin Hansen was named as the league's top offensive lineman and was joined on the first team by a pair of juniors, center Dan Hickman and guard John Krumme. The line set the tone for an offensive unit that set new school records for points scored (408) and offensive yards (4,945) during the season.

Quarterback Jason Schlueter, a junior who started the bulk of the games for the Miners this year, was named as the first team quarterback after a year where he broke the S&T school record for completion percentage. Schlueter completed 161-of-235 passes (68.5 percent) for 1,848 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Greaving, a senior, finished the season with 46 receptions for 618 yards and 11 touchdowns as he was one of five receivers with at least 44 catches on the year. The Miners' second-leading receiver, junior Bryan Crider, was named as the first-team tight end after catching 53 passes for 549 yards and five scores.

S&T had two players on the defensive side of the ball named as the top players at their positions, as sophomore defensive tackle Justin Philpy as the top lineman and senior safety Robbie Woodard was named as the top defensive back.

Philpy finished the year with 31 tackles from his interior line spot, including six for a loss and five quarterback sacks. Meanwhile, Woodard was the Miners' second-leading tackler with 72 and had five tackles for a loss and an interception.

Both were first team selections along with senior defensive end Matt Loula, who led S&T with 8.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for a loss and senior linebacker Justin Butler, the Miners' top tackler on the season with 80 stops.

The Miners also had three second team selections in running back David Shields, who led S&T with 800 yards and a school record 13 rushing touchdowns; defensive end Loren Severs, who had three sacks and six tackles behind the line of scrimmage this season; and linebacker Brett Hanten, who finished the year with 60 tackles including 9.5 behind the line.

Missouri S&T finished the 2008 season with a 7-4 record and won a conference title for the first time since 1983.

2nd half run proves costly in Lady Miners loss to 17th ranked Hillsdale

It was a story of two halves in Missouri S&T's 82-63 loss to 17th ranked Hillsdale College on Sunday afternoon at Bullman. The Lady Miners shot 61 percent in the opening frame but still trailed 40-36 at halftime. The second half though was an entirely different story as the Chargers opened the frame on a 14-0 run knocking down its first seven shots to extend the lead to 18 points while the Lady Miners hit just 1-of-7 and turned it over six times.

The Lady Miners (1-1) got off to great start beginning the game knocking down their first four shots to take a 9-2 lead. They held the lead until a jumper by Katie Cezat put Hillsdale (2-0) up 19-18 at the 12:04 mark. It extend its lead to nine points on a lay-up by Cezat at the 6:27 mark but then S&T began to climb back into the contest going on a 12-2 run to retake the lead getting a pair of old fashioned three point plays from Jazmine Bell get within one then retook the lead on a Lauren Dubbert lay-in with 2:38 to play. The Chargers regained the lead though at the 1:24 mark on a jumper by Laura Barczak and then extended the lead by making 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the final 0:30 seconds.

Bell had 10 points in the opening stanza to lead the Lady Miners while Dubbert had six and Kylee Grant chipped in with five.

S&T tried to make a comeback in the second half cutting the lead to 15 but it was just too much Cezat, who scored 17 points in the frame, and the Hillsdale offense as it shot 18-for-29 (62 percent) in the second half to pull away for the victory. Cezat finished the contest with 32 points on 15-of-23 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds and was named the MVP of the Lady Miner Classic. Claire Aubrey and Janay Miller each finished in double figures as well with 13 and 10 respectively while Brooke Knight finished with 10 assists.

Bell finished the night with a team -high 16 points for S&T while Dubbert added 11 more. Dubbert and Tamara McCaskill were also named to the Lady Miner Classic All-Tournament squad.

The Lady Miners will be back in action on Wednesday evening hosting Blackburn College, a NCAA-III school from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, beginning at 7 p.m.

Lady Miner Classic All-Tournament Team

Karissa Walter - Oakland City
Lauren Dubbert - Missouri S&T
Tamara McCaskill - Missouri S&T
Claire Aubrey - Hillsdale
Brooke Knight - Hillsdale
Katie Cezat (MVP) - Hillsdale

S&T ends Truman hex, takes season finale in double overtime

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Just three weeks ago, Missouri S&T lost a football game on the last snap of the game and has used that disappointment as a springboard to a strong finish to the 2008 season.

On Saturday, the Miners were involved in another game that saw the winning points scored on the final snap of the ball -- but this time, the result went in the Miners' favor as they ended the season with a thrilling 39-38 double overtime win at Truman State.

The victory was the first for the Miners over the Bulldogs since 1983 -- Truman State had beaten S&T 22 straight times heading into Saturday's game -- and gave the Miners their second seven-win season in the last four years as they finished at 7-4.

For much of the first half, it appeared that the Miners were going to run away with the game as they took advantage of some Truman errors to build a 28-7 lead in the second quarter.

After a bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Miners the ball at the Bulldogs' 10-yard line midway through the first quarter, Brad Guidry connected with Mike Greaving for a touchdown on the next play to put S&T in front six minutes into the game.

The Miners got another turnover later in the quarter when Steve Edwards forced a fumble that Brian Gronewold recovered at the Truman 14. They needed only two plays -- a 13-yard run by Jason Schlueter and a one-yard touchdown run by David Shields -- to extend the lead to 14-0.

After the Bulldogs cut the lead in half with their first scoring drive of the day, the Miners got their 14-point lead back when Guidry threw a 30-yard scoring pass to Chad Shockley. With 3:32 left in the half, Guidry threw his third scoring pass of the half when he hit Shields on a six-yard scoring play to push the advantage to 28-7.

However, the Bulldogs spent the better part of the next two quarters wiping out that lead. Matt Ticich threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Albert Coker with a minute to go in the half to make it 28-14 at the break, then after S&T missed a chance to extend the lead when Joe Drahos' field goal hit the upright, the Bulldogs got on a roll on the offensive side.

A 34-yard field goal by Mickey Massuci, followed by a 28-yard scoring pass from Ticich to Kendrick Blue -- the two-point conversion attempt failed -- cut the lead to 28-23. Truman then put together a 55-yard scoring drive to take its first lead of the game when Ticich ran 14 yards to the end zone with 2:18 to go; a two-point conversion made it 31-28.

The Miners opened their last drive of regulation time at their own 42 and needed a fourth down completion to Greaving to keep the drive going. The drive almost ended in disaster again when Zach Howard fumbled after making a catch, but Shockley pounced on the loose ball at the Truman 18.

Drahos atoned for his missed field goal by connecting on a 29-yarder with 19 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

The Miners got the ball first in overtime, but only gained five yards on the three plays and then had a missed field goal to give the Bulldogs a chance to win it. The Miner defense answered the challenge, forcing a field goal attempt by Massuci that went wide to send the game to another overtime period.

Truman opened that period by scoring on the first play as Ticich connected with Coker to give the Bulldogs a 38-31 lead, but the Miners came back and put together the winning drive.

Guidry hit Bryan Crider for a first down to the Truman 14, then on a third-and-seven, the Bulldogs were flagged for pass interference at the two-yard line to give the Miners a first-and goal.

After the first two plays netted just one yard, Guidry took the third down play in to cut the lead to one. Head coach Kirby Cannon decided to go for the win right there and Shields took the ball in for the game-winning two-point conversion.

The Miners finished with 478 yards of total offense and broke their single-season scoring record in the process with 408 points on the season. Guidry was 35-of-52 for 383 yards and three touchdowns, with Howard catching 11 of the passes for 103 yards.

Shockley also reached the 100-yard mark on his eight catches.

Matt Loula finished with 15 tackles and Edwards with 13 on the defensive side of the ball. Loula and Justin Philpy each finished with a sack in the game.

Miners go double overtime to secure season-opening win

The Miners made sure that on the night the floor at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building was dedicated in honor of the program's winningest coach that they weren't going down to defeat.

After watching Steven Barnett's three-pointer go in just before the buzzer in regulation to send the game to overtime -- and watching Harding follow that by taking a quick four-point lead in the extra period -- the Miners came back to force a second overtime period which it dominated to come away with a 93-80 double overtime win over the Bisons at Billy Key Court.

In a game that included 11 lead changes and 13 ties, neither team was able to build a lead of more than six points in the first 45 minutes of play. S&T built its six-point lead at 21-15 after a pair of free throws by Aaron Redecker at the 4:45 mark and maintained the advantage for the balance of the half, going into the locker room with a 29-24 lead.

The Miners continued to hold the lead until the 12:29 mark of the second half, when the Bisons made a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 51-45. S&T answered with a 12-3 spurt of its own, as it regained the lead when Aaron Hays drained a three-pointer with 6:02 to go to give the Miners a 57-54 lead.

The game was tied at 65 with just over two minutes to go when Harding's Brian Howard fouled out when he was whistled for a block, which led to a technical foul being called on the Harding bench. Adam Knollmeyer made three of the four free throws to give S&T a three-point lead, but the Miners were unable to put the game away.

Hays hit the first of two at the line with five seconds to go to give S&T a three-point lead, but missed the second and Barnett took the rebound up the floor and fired up a shot from 22 feet away that went in at the buzzer to tie it at 72.

Harding jumped on top with baskets on its first two possessions in overtime, but the Miners clawed back and drew even at 78 when Justin Taylor hit two free throws with 26 seconds to go. Trent Morgan missed a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds for the Bisons, then the Miners got one last chance but saw Taylor's three-pointer rim out at the horn.

Unfazed, the Miners jumped into the lead in the second overtime period and never relinquished it. Marquis Jones knocked down a three from the 26 seconds into the period, then hit another one with just over two minutes to go to give the Miners their biggest lead of the night at 86-78.

S&T outscored Harding 15-2 in the second overtime period and held the Bisons without a field goal during those five minutes.

The Miners had five players in double figures, led by Redecker with 17 points. Taylor and Knollmeyer had 15 apiece; Knollmeyer finished with a double-double as he added 15 boards. S&T also got 11 points apiece from Jones and A.J. Mandani.

Morgan led all scorers in the contest with 21 points, while Barnett had 19 before he fouled out in the second overtime.

S&T (1-0) will face Lincoln Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game in Jefferson City.

After tussling with Lincoln in a close affair for a little more than a half, the Missouri S&T women's basketball broke free with a 23-6 run in the second half and went on to record a season-opening 71-46 win over the Blue Tigers at Billy Key Court.

The Lady Miners led 30-22 at the half and still held only a six-point advantage four minutes into the second half at 38-32 after a three-pointer by Cherika Ramsey. But a three-pointer by Kylee Grant, the second of four in the second half for S&T, started the decisive run that ended with the Lady Miners up by 23 with 5:30 left to play.

Stacey Smith answered the Grant three with a basket, but the Lady Miners rattled off 10 straight points on lay-ins by Katie McElrath and Brittany Percival, followed by back-to-back three-pointers by Lauren Dubbert.

The Lady Miners finished the second half by shooting 53.8 percent in the second half.

Lincoln had only one lead in the game -- at 2-0 -- but the Lady Miners ran off the next 12 points to take the lead for good. The Blue Tigers only got as close as five after that.

Dubbert finished with a game-high 18 points and connected on five of her seven three-point attempts in the contest. Otherwise, the Lady Miners had balanced scoring with Tamara McCaskill finishing with 10 points, Grant with eight and five others with six points apiece.

S&T (1-0) will face 17th-ranked Hillsdale (1-0), a 104-62 winner over Oakland City in the first game of Saturday's action in the Lady Miner Tip-Off Classic, at 4 p.m. Sunday at Billy Key Court.
