Trio of former Miners, two teams to enter S&T Athletic Hall of Fame
HOF 2009
ROLLA, Mo. – Three individuals who finished their careers at the top of the career charts in their respective sports and two of the Miners' top teams will be inducted this weekend into the Missouri S&T Athletic Hall of Fame as the Class of 2009.

The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place at Matt’s Steakhouse in Rolla at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and this year’s induction class will also be honored at halftime of the Miners’ football game Saturday afternoon against Saint Joseph’s College. The football game starts at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

This year’s class of inductees includes:

JENNIFER (CREDE) BROOKS (Softball, Class of 1993): Brooks completed her four-year career with the Lady Miner softball program as the career leader in several categories, including games and innings pitched, wins, complete games, shutouts and strikeouts. She was the winning pitcher 47 times in her S&T career, with a 1.72 earned run average, 460 strikeouts, 19 shutouts and 83 complete games in 578 innings pitched. Her 1.38 earned run average in the 1991 season stood as the best single-season mark for more than a decade, a season in which she also set a single-game record by striking out 18 in a seven-inning shutout over Indiana (Pa.). She was a two-time All-MIAA selection and earned Academic All-America honors following the 2003 season.

JEFF KUTA (Swimming, Class of 1992): Kuta was a standout performer in the Miner swimming program, becoming the university’s first student-athlete to earn a berth to the United States Olympic Trials in the sport. During his career as a Miner, he earned five All-America awards in the freestyle events and established school records in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. He was the first swimmer in Miner history to break 21 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 46 seconds in the 100, marks that helped him earn the berth to the 1992 Olympic Trials.

STAN SHUEMAKER (Men’s Basketball, Class of 1985): Shuemaker was one of the top playmaking guards for the Miner basketball team in the early 1980s, averaging in double figures as a scorer and holding a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio in his two seasons with the team. He averaged 14.3 points and recorded a conference-high 134 assists to earn second-team All-MIAA honors in the 1983-84 season. During his tenure with the Miners, Shuemaker established both the single-game and single-season marks for assists.

1947 SWIMMING TEAM: The Miners’ 1947 swimming team was the first to win a conference championship in its sport, doing so as a member of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association in its inaugural league meet. The Miners established conference records in each of the nine events contested at the championship as they swept the first place finishes in the finals. Ray Williams was the top scorer for the Miners with 12 2/3 points as he won two individual events and assisted in a relay victory, while George Eaton claimed firsts in diving and the 100-yard freestyle. Charles Bernard was the head coach of the 1947 Miners and would also guide the 1948 team to an MIAA championship.

1969 FOOTBALL TEAM: The Miners concluded the 1969 campaign with a final record of 7-2 – the best mark posted by the school’s football team in 19 seasons. The team, guided by head coach Dewey Allgood, opened that campaign with six straight victories, the first time that had occurred since 1914, and recorded victories over Southwest Missouri State and Illinois-Chicago at Soldier Field along the way. Offensive lineman Frank Winfield earned All-America honors and was one of six Miners named to the All-MIAA team; nine members of the team have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.   The defense intercepted 28 passes that season and held its opponents to just 222 yards of total offense per game, while the Miners reached the end zone a school record 36 times.
