Missouri S&T has had three members of its track & field program named today to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district team for the recently completed 2009 season.
Senior Jordan Henry, who finished fifth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships after winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the event, was selected to the first team in District 7. S&T also had a second-team selection from the men’s team in sophomore distance runner Allen Ernst and on the women’s side as senior pole vaulter Jamie Moline was named.
Henry, an electrical engineering major at Missouri S&T, was the recipient of the GLVC’s Paragon Award for the 2008-09 season as the top student-athlete in the conference as well as Missouri S&T’s Gale Bullman Award winner in the past year. He finished his career as the school record holder in the outdoor pole vault at 17-0 ¾, a mark he set at the conference meet and matched while earning All-America honors for the fifth time.
He won five GLVC titles in his career, including four in the pole vault and was the first league champion in the indoor heptathlon this season. He has also earned numerous academic honors while earning his degree from Missouri S&T and also served on the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
As a first-team selection, Henry is eligible for Academic All-America honors when that team is announced later this month. He was a second-team selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America squad last season.
Ernst, who majors in mechanical engineering, had the Miners’ top mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season with a time of 9:37.40, a time he posted to finish fourth at the GLVC Championships. He also had the team’s top performance in the indoor 3,000-meters of 8:46.06 at Iowa State, while also competing in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter events where he posted S&T’s second-best mark during the outdoor season in the latter event.
Moline was one of the Lady Miners’ top pole vaulters over the last four seasons and posted third place finishes in the pole vault at both GLVC meets this season. Her top mark of 11-3 ¾ came in a meet at Missouri Southern in late April.
During her S&T career, Moline -- a biological sciences major -- earned five top-three finishes in the pole vault at GLVC meets over the last four seasons, including a second place finish in 2006 at the league's indoor championships. She was also an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in the event during the 2008 indoor season and earned GLVC "Athlete of the Week" honors.
All three selections to the academic all-district teams were also among 101 from Missouri S&T named today to the GLVC's All-Academic team.
