Slow start, turnovers costly to Miners in loss to Missouri Southern
Foster-HU09
PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T was unable to overcome a slow start and a slew of turnovers in its first game away from home, falling by the score of 110-66 Friday to Missouri Southern in the Chatters/Comfort Inn Classic at Pittsburg State University.
The Lions, former rivals of the Miners when S&T was a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, scored the game’s first five points and never trailed throughout the contest to send the Miners to their second loss in as many games.
S&T shot 45.8 percent for the night, but were victimized by Missouri Southern’s defense which forced it into 37 turnovers in the contest. The Lions were able to score 19 points off the S&T mistakes in the first half to build as much as a 20-point lead; MSSU led 51-35 at the break.
Southern scored the first 11 points in the second half to break the game wide open, extending the margin to 27 points and never looked back.
The Miners were led by freshman Bryce Foster with 21 points; he made seven of his nine shots from the floor and four-of-six from three-point range to lead S&T in scoring for the second straight game. No other Miner scored in double figures Friday.
S&T will return to the floor Saturday when it faces another former foe from the MIAA, taking on host Pittsburg State at 7 p.m.
