ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Missouri S&T's quest to make the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament field in men's soccer got a big boost Sunday, as Zack Hay's goal late in the second half gave the Miners a 1-0 win at Missouri-St. Louis.

Hay broke the scoreless tie in a tightly-contested game when he got to a rebound and put a shot past UMSL goalkeeper Mike Bober with 7:48 to play. The Miner defense finished off the win by preserving Pat McNamee's fifth shutout of the season.

The Tritons had the advantage in shots for the game by an 8-7 margin, while the Miners had eight corner kicks to UMSL's seven. The Miners had three shots on goal and McNamee was credited with two saves.

The win moves the Miners to 6-4-2 overall and 4-1-2 in GLVC play; they moved into a virtual tie for fourth place with Drury in the league standings with five games remaining, three of which are against teams among the top five in the conference.

Missouri S&T will head back on the road next weekend, beginning with a game Friday at Wisconsin_Parkside at 1:15 p.m.

The Miners got a goal in each half, one from Sam Shaffer in the first half and from Nick Landon in the second, while goalkeepers Pat McNamee and Tom Lawton combined to post S&T's fifth shutout of the season.

Shaffer got his goal at the 16:26 mark when Nick Mentesana sent a pass through the Southern defense and he put a shot past goalkeeper Jon Hansen.

The Miners were able to extend their lead a little over two minutes into the second half when Landon took a shot that was stopped by Hansen, but was able to get to the rebound first and put a second attempt just inside the post to make it 2-0.

McNamee made three saves in goal before he was relieved by Tom Lawton for the final 16 minutes; Lawton was able to preserve the shutout by making a nice stop on a shot by Nate Evans in the waning moments.

Missouri S&T, which improved to 5-4-2 on the season with the win, was able to use a number of players in Thursday's contest against a Lion team still seeking its first win of the year, as 24 players saw playing time in the game.

The Miners resume GLVC play Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. game at Missouri-St. Louis.

After a scoreless first half, the Pumas drew first blood 6:26 into the second half. Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee stopped an initial shot by Puma forward Bojan Adler, but Tyler Kincaid got to the rebound just outside the box and sent a bad angle shot on goal that went off McNamee's hands and in.

However, the Miners were able to draw even a little over three minutes later on a set piece, as Andy Held got to Brandon Moore's free kick and headed the ball past Alex Makin at the 54:53 mark.

The teams stayed tied through the rest of regulation time, then both teams had golden opportunities to win the game in the opening moments of overtime. S&T's Afif Najjar had an open look at the goal but was turned away by Makin, then Kincaid had a shot go off the far post moments later.

The Pumas (3-5-3, 1-2-2 GLVC) outshot the Miners 22-12 in the contest, with McNamee finishing with five saves for S&T (4-4-2, 3-1-2 GLVC). Makin made eight saves for the Pumas.

Missouri S&T returns to action Thursday with a 5 p.m. non-conference game against Missouri Southern at the S&T Soccer Field.

Corey Bailey tapped in a pass from Mario Calderon with just over six minutes to play in regulation time Friday night, giving Missouri S&T a thrilling 1-0 win over Indianapolis in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer action.

The Miners and Greyhounds were locked up in a tense defensive struggle for much of the night, as only 11 shots were on goal in the contest. Indianapolis had a 9-2 advantage in overall shots in a scoreless first half, but the Miners racheted up their play in a more evenly matched second half.

S&T finally broke the tie with 6:04 to play in regulation as Mario Calderon got a pass through the UIndy defense to Bailey, who tapped a shot past goalkeeper Michael Crane to get the Miners on the board.

The S&T defense and goalkeeper Pat McNamee took care of the rest, as the freshman turned away all seven shots he saw on net to record his fourth shutout of the year.

Missouri S&T improved to 4-4-1 overall and to 3-1-1 in GLVC play; it will host Saint Joseph's Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Missouri S&T was the last team to beat Northern Kentucky in a regular season game in men's soccer, but wasn't able to complete the bookend of the winning streak as the Norse came away with a 3-1 win over S&T Sunday afternoon.

Steven Beattie broke a one-all tie with a goal 14 minutes into the second half and the Norse, ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Division II poll, added a second goal later in the period to come away with their 29th straight regular season win since the Miners won at NKU in 2006.

The Norse got on the scoreboard first at the 19:09 mark on a goal by Mike Jonca, but the Miners tied the score a little over four minutes later when Nick Mentesana took a pass from Garrett Stevens and put a shot by goalkeeper Michael Lavric.

NKU outshot the Miners 23-6 in the game with S&T not being credited with a shot in the second half. Pat McNamee had eight saves in goal for the Miners, who fell to 3-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the GLVC.

Miners rally late to earn tie with Knights

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After falling behind by two goals at the half, the Missouri S&T men's soccer team came back after the break and claimed a 2-2 tie with Bellarmine in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday evening.

The Miners got goals from Garrett Stevens and Andy Held in the second half -- the latter with 46 seconds to play in regulation time -- to send the game into overtime. Neither team scored in the 20 minutes of overtime.

Bellarmine jumped on top 7:44 into the game when Ross Hopkins put in a shot from the top of the box. The Knights then extended their lead 23 minutes later when Brad Barraclough tipped in a pass from Hopkins to give the hosts the 2-0 advantage they would take to the break.

S&T cut the lead in half just 1:42 into the second half when Stevens took a pass from J.J. Bilyeu and hit a shot by Knight goalkeeper Justin Welply.

Then as the game moved into the final minute, Held got to a rebound and put it by Welply to get the Miners even.

Bellarmine outshot the Miners 24-17 in the game; S&T goalkeeper Pat McNamee was credited with 10 saves in goal.

The Miners (3-3-1, 2-0-1 GLVC) will face No. 1-ranked Northern Kentucky Sunday in Highland Heights, Ky.

The Miners (3-3, 2-0 GLVC) got the only goal they needed at the 21:23 mark of the first half, as Garrett Stevens put home a rebound after Panther goalkeeper Ryan Samuels had stopped Brandon Moore's initial shot.

S&T's defense held firm against a barrage of scoring attempts by the Panthers after getting the lead, but a majority of the 20 KWC shots never made it on goal. Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee finished with six saves for the day.

A physical second half eventually led to the Miners' last two goals that came on penalty kicks. Mario Calderon converted both of them, the first at 76:55 and the second just over six minutes later.

The Miners had a 25-20 advantage in shots, with a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.

S&T will head to the road for its next two contests, beginning Friday with a game at Bellarmine and then a meeting with top-ranked Northern Kentucky next Sunday.

Miners hold stat edge, but fall short to Prairie Stars

Missouri S&T dominated the stat sheet Sunday afternoon except for one category: goals.

Illinois-Springfield made the most of its limited scoring chances and came away with a 3-1 win over the Miners in men's soccer action at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Prairie Stars were outshot by the Miners 26-9 in the game and had only five shots on goal to the Miners' 11. However, UIS turned two counterattack plays into goals in the first half and rode the play of All-America goalkeeper Chance Walker to keep S&T at bay as it tried to rally in the second half.

UIS took the lead just under five minutes into play when Jakub Piotrowski headed in a cross from Brian Doellman, then added to its lead on another counter as Eddie Sayon scored at the 25:35 mark.

The Miners cut the lead in half 12 minutes into the second half when Nick Landon escaped from a pack of UIS defenders, then made a pass across the box to J.J. Bilyeu who in turn tapped the ball out to Brandon Moore for a point blank shot that cut the lead to 2-1.

S&T continued to put pressure on the Prairie Stars after getting its first goal, but the visitors got an insurance goal when Piotrowski hit a long shot that just got over the extended arms of Miner goalkeeper Donny Gesell and just under the crossbar to make it 3-1 with nearly nine minutes to play.

Gesell was credited with two saves in his Miner debut in the nets, while Walker finished with 10 saves in the contest.

S&T (1-3) will host Southern Indiana Friday at 7:30 p.m. to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Missouri S&T's men's soccer team opened its home schedule Friday by playing toe-to-toe with a good Christian Brothers team, but the visitors from Memphis got the only goal of the game to come away with a 1-0 win at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Miners outshot the Buccaneers 6-4 in a scoreless first half. CBU had a great scoring chance in the early moments of the the second half when Rasaq Kuteyi ripped a shot that Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee went to his left to turn away.

Men's soccer game with Northwood postponed

Missouri S&T has postponed its men's soccer game with Northwood University due to the weather forecast for Wednesday that calls for heavy amounts of rain over the course of the day and evening.

A storm system moving in from the west and the remnants of Hurricane Gustav moving up from the south are expected to produce rainfall totals anywhere from three to six inches from Tuesday night through Wednesday. Much of south central Missouri is already under a flash flood watch in advance of the approaching weather system.

With Northwood having to travel from Michigan to play the game, the decision to postpone the game was made Tuesday due to the possibility that the game would not be played because of unplayable field conditions if the storm does move into the area with the amount of rainfall that is anticipated.

The women's soccer game between Missouri S&T and Southwest Baptist, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., is still on as scheduled as of Tuesday afternoon.

Miners fall short in high scoring soccer opener

ASHLAND, Ohio -- One goal the Missouri S&T had for the 2008 season was to be a better offensive team, and in Friday's season opening contest against Ashland, the Miners put three goals on the board.

However, Ashland countered with four, including the game-winner on a penalty kick with just over 25 minutes remaining, to come away with a 4-3 win over the Miners.

S&T fell behind 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of the contest, as Adam Spannbauer scored twice from close in. But the Miners' Nick Landon answered with two goals of his own before the first half ended to draw S&T even by the intermission.

Landon's first goal was an unassisted tally at the 38:45 mark, then he tied the game nearly four minutes later when he converted a cross from Afif Najjar.

The Eagles regained the lead 8:49 into the second half when Spannbauer completed his hat trick by scoring on a volley past goalkeeper Pat McNamee, who took over at the start of the second half from Tom Lawton.

S&T tied the score again at the 62:08 mark when Mario Calderon redirected a ball from Brandon Moore past goalkeeper Ryan Cruise to knot the score at three. But moments later, the Miners were whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Tom Mangotic made the penalty kick for what turned out to be the decisive goal.

The Miners outshot the Eagles 12-8 in the game.

S&T (0-1) will face Tiffin Sunday in Tiffin, Ohio at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time).

Miners look to return to GLVC Tournament as new season begins

Nick Landon

The Miner soccer team showed throughout the 2007 season that it was one of the stingiest teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in terms of giving up goals. However, it had a tough time scoring itself during the course of a transition year and it led to a record that fell just below the .500 mark.

With the 2008 campaign right around the corner – beginning Friday when Missouri S&T opens at Ashland – the Miners are hopeful that they can find the scoring touch while continuing to keep the opponents off the scoreboard.

The Miners allowed only 19 goals in the 18 games they played last season and more than two goals only one time, which came against eventual GLVC champion Northern Kentucky.

“Last year, we showed that we could compete with every team in the league,” said Miner coach Joe Ahearn. “Our goal for this season is to show that we can finish off games. We need to get better at getting better.”

S&T does have to replace its record-setting goalkeeper in Mike McNamee, but Tom Lawton (Madison, Wis./West) did see nearly 500 minutes of playing time in 2007 and posted a 1.11 goals against average. He will be competing with returner Matt Wilson (Sherwood, Ark.), redshirt freshman Pat McNamee (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) and incoming freshman Donny Gesell (St; Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) for the starting role.

On the back line, the Miners return senior Keith Beers (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt), juniors Brian Tucker (O’Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and Tony Lambropolous (Evanston, Ill.), and sophomores Dan Stokes (Kirkwood, Mo./Vianney) and Kenny Gravlin (Florissant, Mo./St. Louis University High).

S&T is also looking for key contributions from several freshmen this season. Newcomers J.J. Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./CBC), Zack Hay (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo), Jonathan Goecker (Blue Springs, Mo.), Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) and Ryan Muich (O’Fallon, Ill.) have made impressions during the pre-season and will push for playing time.

The Miners have a good deal of experience at the midfield spots, led by seniors Brandon Moore (Rolla, Mo.) Nick Mentesana (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Steven White (Pueblo, Colo.) and Larry McNamara (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Jesuit), juniors Nick Landon (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) and Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico) and sophomore Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville).

Joe Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) and Kyle Sneed (Humble, Texas) also figure to see playing time along with newcomer Jorge Quiroz (Caracas, Venezuela).

Up front, the Miners have their leading scorer from the last two seasons back in Andy Held (Alton, Ill.). The senior forward scored five times last season after posting 11 goals as a sophomore and will look to return to his status as one of the top goal scorers in the GLVC.

In addition, the Miners return Garrett Stevens (Richland, Wash.), Dan Salzman (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst) and Afif Najjar (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), as well as veteran Corey Bailey (Olathe, Kan./North). Sophomores Patrick McVey (Kirkwood, Mo.) and Jeremy McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) also figure to see playing time as well.

“Over last 12 months, this program has made significant strides,” Ahearn said. “The work our veterans put in during off-season has really raised the standards and our newcomers have shown they’re ready to take on the task.”
