Miners dominate selections on All-GLFC football team

Missouri S&T won the Great Lakes Football Conference championship in 2008 and the league's all-conference team was a reflection of that, as the Miners had 13 selections to the squad and won six additional awards for their performance.

Of the 13 players named to the All-GLFC team, 10 were first team selections. In addition, Miner head coach Kirby Cannon was selected as the GLFC's "Coach of the Year", senior wide receiver Mike Greaving was named as the league's "Offensive Player of the Year" and he along with five of his teammates were named as the top players at their respective positions.

Six of the Miners' 10 first team picks were on the offensive side of the ball, including three from the offensive line. Senior guard Justin Hansen was named as the league's top offensive lineman and was joined on the first team by a pair of juniors, center Dan Hickman and guard John Krumme. The line set the tone for an offensive unit that set new school records for points scored (408) and offensive yards (4,945) during the season.

Quarterback Jason Schlueter, a junior who started the bulk of the games for the Miners this year, was named as the first team quarterback after a year where he broke the S&T school record for completion percentage. Schlueter completed 161-of-235 passes (68.5 percent) for 1,848 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Greaving, a senior, finished the season with 46 receptions for 618 yards and 11 touchdowns as he was one of five receivers with at least 44 catches on the year. The Miners' second-leading receiver, junior Bryan Crider, was named as the first-team tight end after catching 53 passes for 549 yards and five scores.

S&T had two players on the defensive side of the ball named as the top players at their positions, as sophomore defensive tackle Justin Philpy as the top lineman and senior safety Robbie Woodard was named as the top defensive back.

Philpy finished the year with 31 tackles from his interior line spot, including six for a loss and five quarterback sacks. Meanwhile, Woodard was the Miners' second-leading tackler with 72 and had five tackles for a loss and an interception.

Both were first team selections along with senior defensive end Matt Loula, who led S&T with 8.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for a loss and senior linebacker Justin Butler, the Miners' top tackler on the season with 80 stops.

The Miners also had three second team selections in running back David Shields, who led S&T with 800 yards and a school record 13 rushing touchdowns; defensive end Loren Severs, who had three sacks and six tackles behind the line of scrimmage this season; and linebacker Brett Hanten, who finished the year with 60 tackles including 9.5 behind the line.

Missouri S&T finished the 2008 season with a 7-4 record and won a conference title for the first time since 1983.

S&T ends Truman hex, takes season finale in double overtime

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Just three weeks ago, Missouri S&T lost a football game on the last snap of the game and has used that disappointment as a springboard to a strong finish to the 2008 season.

On Saturday, the Miners were involved in another game that saw the winning points scored on the final snap of the ball -- but this time, the result went in the Miners' favor as they ended the season with a thrilling 39-38 double overtime win at Truman State.

The victory was the first for the Miners over the Bulldogs since 1983 -- Truman State had beaten S&T 22 straight times heading into Saturday's game -- and gave the Miners their second seven-win season in the last four years as they finished at 7-4.

For much of the first half, it appeared that the Miners were going to run away with the game as they took advantage of some Truman errors to build a 28-7 lead in the second quarter.

After a bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Miners the ball at the Bulldogs' 10-yard line midway through the first quarter, Brad Guidry connected with Mike Greaving for a touchdown on the next play to put S&T in front six minutes into the game.

The Miners got another turnover later in the quarter when Steve Edwards forced a fumble that Brian Gronewold recovered at the Truman 14. They needed only two plays -- a 13-yard run by Jason Schlueter and a one-yard touchdown run by David Shields -- to extend the lead to 14-0.

After the Bulldogs cut the lead in half with their first scoring drive of the day, the Miners got their 14-point lead back when Guidry threw a 30-yard scoring pass to Chad Shockley. With 3:32 left in the half, Guidry threw his third scoring pass of the half when he hit Shields on a six-yard scoring play to push the advantage to 28-7.

However, the Bulldogs spent the better part of the next two quarters wiping out that lead. Matt Ticich threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Albert Coker with a minute to go in the half to make it 28-14 at the break, then after S&T missed a chance to extend the lead when Joe Drahos' field goal hit the upright, the Bulldogs got on a roll on the offensive side.

A 34-yard field goal by Mickey Massuci, followed by a 28-yard scoring pass from Ticich to Kendrick Blue -- the two-point conversion attempt failed -- cut the lead to 28-23. Truman then put together a 55-yard scoring drive to take its first lead of the game when Ticich ran 14 yards to the end zone with 2:18 to go; a two-point conversion made it 31-28.

The Miners opened their last drive of regulation time at their own 42 and needed a fourth down completion to Greaving to keep the drive going. The drive almost ended in disaster again when Zach Howard fumbled after making a catch, but Shockley pounced on the loose ball at the Truman 18.

Drahos atoned for his missed field goal by connecting on a 29-yarder with 19 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

The Miners got the ball first in overtime, but only gained five yards on the three plays and then had a missed field goal to give the Bulldogs a chance to win it. The Miner defense answered the challenge, forcing a field goal attempt by Massuci that went wide to send the game to another overtime period.

Truman opened that period by scoring on the first play as Ticich connected with Coker to give the Bulldogs a 38-31 lead, but the Miners came back and put together the winning drive.

Guidry hit Bryan Crider for a first down to the Truman 14, then on a third-and-seven, the Bulldogs were flagged for pass interference at the two-yard line to give the Miners a first-and goal.

After the first two plays netted just one yard, Guidry took the third down play in to cut the lead to one. Head coach Kirby Cannon decided to go for the win right there and Shields took the ball in for the game-winning two-point conversion.

The Miners finished with 478 yards of total offense and broke their single-season scoring record in the process with 408 points on the season. Guidry was 35-of-52 for 383 yards and three touchdowns, with Howard catching 11 of the passes for 103 yards.

Shockley also reached the 100-yard mark on his eight catches.

Matt Loula finished with 15 tackles and Edwards with 13 on the defensive side of the ball. Loula and Justin Philpy each finished with a sack in the game.

Guidry lands GLFC "Player of Week" award after record-setting day

Missouri S&T quarterback Brad Guidry, who set a single-game record with his seven touchdown passes on Saturday, was named today as the Great Lakes Football Conference's "Offensive Player of the Week" for his performance in the 63-23 win over Southwest Baptist.

Guidry completed 31-of-42 passes in the contest for 437 yards -- with no interceptions or sacks -- and the seven touchdowns. One of the seven scores covered 86 yards to Jordan Beard, the third-longest pass play in school history.

Four of Guidry's touchdown passes came during the course of a 28-0 run in the second half that allowed the Miners to break the game open.

It is the second time this season that Guidry has been honored by the GLFC, as he shared the league's weekly award with teammate Jason Schlueter after the Oct. 18 win over Kentucky Wesleyan.

Guidry is a senior from Rusk, Texas and has completed 71-of-103 passes for 966 yards and 13 touchdowns in the five games he has appeared in this season.

Five Miners selected to academic all-district squad

Five other members of the Miners have been named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII team for the 2008 season.

The players selected were junior offensive linemen Dan Hickman and John Krumme, junior wide receiver Chad Shockley, senior defensive end Matt Loula and junior defensive back Jon Landstra. Hickman and Loula were first-team picks, making them eligible for Academic All-America honors, while the other three were named to the second team.

Hickman, who is majoring in mechanical engineering, is the center on the Miners' offensive line that heads a unit that is averaging 446.7 yards per game of total offense and 36.9 points per game. The Miners have rushed for 1,653 yards this season, the most since 1993 and are the only team in NCAA Division II this season to score 60 points in back-to-back games.

Krumme, a chemical engineering major, plays at left guard on the Miner offensive line and has been a starter throughout the season at that spot.

Shockley is one of four Miner receivers with at least 39 catches this year as he is second on the team with 48 receptions for a team-high 624 yards and six touchdowns. A history major at Missouri S&T, Shockley recently passed the 1,000-yard mark for his career in receiving yards.

Loula, a nuclear engineering major, leads the Miners in quarterback sacks with 7.5 after recording three in S&T's win Saturday over Southwest Baptist and has a team-high 12 tackles for a loss this year. He leads all Miner defensive linemen in tackles with 39, including 17 solo stops and has 17 sacks in his career.

Landstra, a computer engineering major at S&T, plays at safety and has 25 stops on the season with three pass breakups. He is part of a secondary that has held opposing teams to 214.3 yards per game through the air.

Student-athletes must have a 3.3 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore in eligibility with one full year at the institution in order to be eligible for ESPN The Magazine academic honors, which are voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Academic All-America team will be announced in December.

Miners rout Bearcats to lock up winning season, GLFC title

Missouri S&T's football record book was referred to often Saturday afternoon on a day when the Miners did the one thing they set out to do when the day started -- lock up a winning season.

The Miners got their sixth win of the year in impressive fashion, running up their second-highest offensive total in school history as they blasted Southwest Baptist 63-23 on Senior Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. They also got a bonus Saturday, as Saint Joseph's 30-7 win over Central State gave the Miners the Great Lakes Football Conference title.

The title is the first league title for Missouri S&T in football since 1983 when it shared the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship.

Two of the seniors put their name in the record book in a game where S&T surpassed the 60-point mark for the second week in row, something that had not happened since 1914.

Brad Guidry spearheaded the Miner passing attack by completing 31-of-42 passes for a career-high 437 yards and seven touchdowns -- breaking the S&T record shared by Evan Gray and Joe Winters. The 437 yards were the sixth-most in school history in one game.

Guidry got the Miners on the scoreboard on the game's opening possession, which was set up by Zach Howard's 45-yard kickoff return to start the contest. Three plays into the drive, Guidry connected with Howard for an 11-yard scoring pass to put S&T in front.

After the Miner defense stopped SBU's potent offense on a fourth-and-six play at the S&T 30, the Miners put together a 10-play scoring drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by David Shields -- his 12th on the ground this season that also broke the school's single-season mark shared by Bob Berry and Terry Ryan.

The Bearcats got their first points of the day on a 21-yard field goal by Justin Finch, but another big kickoff return by Howard put S&T in business at the Bearcats' 28-yard line. A little under two minutes later, Mike Greaving hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Guidry to give S&T a 21-3 lead.

Johnnie King's 65-yard touchdown catch cut the lead to 21-10 late in the first period, then the teams played scoreless football for the balance of the half. However, the scoring resumed after the intermission and much of it came from the home team.

On the first play of the second half, Steve Edwards picked off a Steve Gachette pass and ran it back to the SBU 25, which was followed four plays later by the first of three touchdown catches by Jordan Beard as he escaped from a defender and dove inside the pylon to extend the lead.

The Bearcats closed the margin to 11 again on Clint Carroz's one-yard touchdown run, but S&T answered by rattling off 28 unanswered points to bust the game wide open.

Guidry got the drive going with a 21-yard run to get the ball into SBU territory, then completed the drive by hitting Beard for a 40-yard touchdown pass.

Beard got into the end zone again on the Miners' next possession, as he hauled in a pass along the sideline in front of the S&T bench and raced to the end zone to give the Miners a 42-17 lead.

Guidry got his record-tying touchdown pass on a 12-yard scoring pass to Chad Shockley early in the fourth quarter, then broke the mark when he connected with Howard on a crossing pattern for an 18-yard score.

Mike Wilson wrapped up the scoring with just over a minute to play when he raced 67 yards for his fourth touchdown in the last two weeks.

Beard had a big day in the receiving department for the Miners, as he caught eight passes for 201 yards and the three scores. Bryan Crider also caught seven passes on the day while Mike Greaving had six grabs. Howard finished the day with 181 all-purpose yards.

S&T finished the afternoon with 666 yards of total offense, a mark surpassed only by the 697 posted by the Miners in the Oct. 18 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. S&T finished with 217 yards on the ground and 449 passing; they have racked up 1,248 yards over the last two weeks of play.

Defensively, the Miners gave up 469 yards but kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the better part of the day, forcing two turnovers and stopping SBU on downs twice. Defensive end Matt Loula had three sacks on the afternoon and also forced two fumbles.

The Miners, 6-4 on the season, will finish its 2008 season next Saturday when they face Truman State in a make-up game of the August 28 contest that was postponed due to lightning. Game time will be at 1 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo.

Woodard finished the game with five tackles, including one for a loss, and had one of the Miners' five pass interceptions in the contest. As a unit, the Miners held Lincoln to just 51 yards of total offense and four first downs in the rout.

Lincoln ran only four plays from scrimmage from the Miners' side of the 50-yard line and did not get past the S&T 45-yard line the entire afternoon.

Miners score most points in 85 years in romp over LU

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- With apologies to rock-and-roll legend Sammy Hagar, the Missouri S&T football team put one foot on the gas Saturday and didn't take it off until it had rolled up its biggest point total in 85 years.

The Miners, who entered Saturday's game at Lincoln having outscored its opponents 67-27 in the first quarter this season, ran out to a 35-0 lead before the opening quarter ended and continued the onslaught for the better part of the afternoon in an eventual 68-0 victory over the Blue Tigers at Dwight Reed Stadium.

The 68 points were the most for a Miner team in modern-day history and the most by any Miner team since 1923, when S&T defeated Kansas City 109-0. The Miners outgained the Blue Tigers by a margin of 582-to-51 in the yardage department, getting 33 first downs to Lincoln's four and forcing seven LU turnovers.

S&T dominated the contest right from the start, scoring touchdowns on each of its first six possessions including three on drives of 15 yards or less thanks to numerous mistakes made by the hosts.

The Miners' first score came on a seven-yard scoring run by David Shields to cap a 63-yard drive, then their second drive -- aided by a pass interference penalty -- ended with a nine-yard scoring pass from Jason Schlueter to Mike Greaving.

A play after a fumble gave the Miners the ball at the LU 11, Brad Guidry connected with Greaving, who made a one-handed catch in the back of the end zone to make the score 21-0 with 3:16 left in the quarter.

Lincoln's next drive ended when Loren Severs blocked Charles Christiansen's punt, which Matt Loula returned to the Lincoln nine to set up Shields' second touchdown run of the day and 11th of the season to tie the S&T single season record.

The Miners weren't done scoring in the first quarter, as Kirk Stilwell picked off an Allen McClain pass when Lincoln got the ball back. On the very next play, Guidry hit Bryan Crider and the Jefferson City native took the ball 62 yards for another S&T touchdown.

After building the big first quarter lead, the Miners got three touchdowns from redshirt freshman Mike Wilson -- on runs of 45, 26 and 20 yards -- while Schlueter and Guidry each added an additional touchdown pass.

Schlueter threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Zach Howard, while Guidry's scoring toss covered 23 yards to Chad Shockley.

The Miners rolled up a season-high 356 yards on the ground, with Shields finishing with 112, Wilson with 97 on just five carries and Jake Drallmeier getting 88. Schlueter and Guidry combined to go 18-of-21 for 226 yards and five touchdowns, with seven different receivers catching passes.

Defensively, the Miners held the Blue Tigers to just 40 yards on the ground and to 2-of-18 passing with five interceptions. Stilwell, Steve Edwards, Brian Jordan, Corey Taylor and Robbie Woodard all picked off passes in the game, as Lincoln had only 11 yards through the air on the two completions.

The Blue Tigers (1-7) ran only four of their 41 plays on the Miners' side of the field and the four came after a Miner turnover at their own 49-yard line.

S&T (5-4) will host Southwest Baptist for Senior Day next Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Game time will be at 1 p.m.

Touchdown on final play sends Miners to defeat

WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- Missouri S&T had a 12-point lead with under nine minutes to go Saturday, but Central State rallied and scored a touchdown as time expired -- then kicked the extra point to come away with a stunning 29-28 win over the Miners.

The Miners, who scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter before being held scoreless during the middle two periods, moved ahead 28-16 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Brad Guidry connected with Mike Greaving on a 17-yard scoring pass. However, S&T was unable to slam the door on the Marauders.

First, Guidry had an overthrown pass picked off by Darius Lewis which was returned 15 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 28-22. Following a kickoff that went out of bounds -- giving S&T the ball at its own 40 -- the Miners turned the ball over a fumble to give Central State the ball right back.

S&T was able to stop the Marauders on downs on that series, but went three-and-out on its next possession and CSU took after a punt on its own 45-yard line with 3:15 to play.

The Marauders got a 35-yard pass play from Jeff Brooks to Daniel Stover to get to the S&T, then retained possession after a fumble on the next play. On third down, Jude Diegue completed a pass to Stover to the S&T two-yard line with just over a minute to go.

S&T stopped two running plays for no gain, forcing the Marauders to use their final timeout with 24 seconds remaining. Diegue was then stopped short of the goal line on third down, but Central State was able to line up and get another play off before time expired and Brooks got over on a second effort to tie the score as regulation time expired.

The Marauders were flagged for a excessive celebration after the Brooks touchdown, which moved the extra point attempt back 15 yards. CSU kicker Alphonso Lopez, who had already missed two extra point tries in the contest, converted this attempt to win the game.

Central State took the early lead in the game when Keyonte Hicks ran 53 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game, but the Miners answered that with a quick 56-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard scoring pass from Jason Schlueter to Greaving.

S&T then forced a turnover on downs at the CSU 25, which led to a five-yard scoring run by Jerome Miller to give the Miners a 14-7 lead. Then before the first quarter ended, Steve Edwards blocked a Tyrel Thompson punt and returned it 13 yards for a score to put the Miners up by a 21-7 count.

The Marauders trimmed the Miner lead on a nine-yard touchdown toss from Brooks to Marcus Clark early in the second quarter and then on a 25-yard field goal by Lopez late in the third quarter -- minutes after a Miner scoring chance ended with an interception in the end zone -- to make the score 21-16.

S&T followed the Lopez field goal with its longest scoring drive of the day, getting a 25-yard run from David Shields and a 28-yard pass play to Greaving to set up the scoring pass to the senior wideout to give the Miners their 12-point lead early in the fourth period.

Central State finished the game with a 490-to-241 advantage in yardage, with Hicks finishing the afternoon with 135 yards rushing. Shields led the Miners with 53 yards on the ground, but the Miners had only 124 yards through the air and turned the ball over three times.

S&T (4-4) will face Lincoln University next Saturday in a 2 p.m. game in Jefferson City.

Record-setting day leads Miners to rout over Panthers

A fast start to what turned out to be a record-setting day for the Missouri S&T football team set the tone as the Miners routed Kentucky Wesleyan 58-7 on Homecoming at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners scored on their first five possessions of the game and finished the afternoon with an S&T single-game record 697 yards of total offense, breaking the mark of 601 set 38 years ago in a win over Northwest Missouri State.

The big offensive day was set up by Miner quarterbacks Jason Schlueter and Brad Guidry, who combined to set a school mark by completing 21 straight passes to start the game. The duo finished the day by completing 34-of-41 passes for 454 yards and three touchdowns.

S&T also ran for 243 yards on the day and scored its first five touchdowns on the ground. After the Miners' first drive stalled deep in Panther territory and led to a 24-yard field goal by Joe Drahos, the offense kicked into high gear.

A pass from Schlueter to Zach Howard put the Miners at the KWC one-yard line, where Jerome Miller went in to put the Miners up 10-0. On the Miners' next possession, Guidry hit Mike Greaving for 35 yards to set up a two-yard scoring run by David Shields.

Miller scored his second touchdown five minutes into the second quarter on a three-yard run, then Shields went in from the two with just under five minutes remaining in the half to give the Miners their halftime lead of 31-0.

After Shields' two-yard touchdown run at the 11:04 mark of the third quarter pushed the S&T lead to 38, the Panthers got on the scoreboard when Chris Owen connected with David Smith, who ran through the Miner defense for a 59-yard touchdown to make the score 38-7.

The Miners weren't through on offense, as Chad Shockley caught two scoring passes -- of 32 yards from Guidry and 22 yards from Schlueter -- and Zach Howard caught one of 13 yards from Guidry over the next 10 minutes of action.

Schlueter, who started the contest, was 17-of-19 for 204 yards and Guidry finished 17-of-22 for 250 yards. Five different receivers caught at least five passes for S&T, with Jordan Beard making eight catches for 137 yards and Shockley catching six for 118 yards and the two scores.

Greaving and Howard had seven catches apiece. while Miller had 81 yards on the ground for the Miners and Shields finished with 72 and the three scores. S&T did not punt on any of its 12 possessions in the contest.

The Miner defense held the Panthers to 89 yards in the first half and 266 for the game while forcing two turnovers. S&T got six tackles each from Justin Butler, Jon Landstra and Brett Hanten.

The Miners (4-3) will face Central State (1-6) next Saturday in Wilberforce, Ohio at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern time). The Marauders picked up their first win of the year Saturday when they beat Lincoln 36-16 in Jefferson City.

Miners hang tough, but fall at South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. -- A few bounces went the way of South Dakota Saturday to allow them to break free from Missouri S&T and go on to a 34-3 win over the Miners in the DakotaDome.

S&T gave the host Coyotes all they wanted for much of the afternoon, but the breaks that went USD's way were able to either halt Miner scoring drives or set up scores.

The Miners had the first good scoring chance in the game, as Mike Greaving's leaping catch along the sideline midway through the first quarter set them up at the two-yard line. However, Jerome Miller was stopped for a loss on a fourth down play from inside the one.

USD got on the board first with 4:30 to go in the half when Ben Oberle caught a deflected pass in the back of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown. Kirk Stilwell blocked the extra point to keep the score at 6-0, which is the way it stayed for the balance of the half.

S&T's defense held the Coyotes to 176 yards of total offense in the first half, but were only able to generate 95 yards themselves and had only four first downs in the first 30 minutes.

The balls continued to bounce in favor of the Coyotes early in the second half and they were able to extend their lead as a result.

First, Miner linebacker Justin Butler knocked the ball free from tailback Chris Ganious during the course of a 24-yard run -- only to have guard Luke Nordquist pick up the loose ball and take it to the Miner four-yard line. Three plays later, Issac Newton scored on a three-yard run and a two-point conversion made it 14-0.

S&T drove right back down the field and moved all the way to the USD five, but Brad Guidry's pass to Mike Greaving was knocked out of his hands by Isaiah Dixon and into the hands of Byron Thomas, who returned the pick from his own end zone back to the Miner 17. Noah Shepherd closed that short drive with a one-yard scoring run.

The Miners came back with their first scoring drive of the afternoon, a 43-yard drive that ended with a 34-yard field goal by Joe Drahos with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter.

South Dakota added to its lead on a one-yard scoring run by Dion Foster and a five-yard run by Ganious in the fourth quarter.

The Miners finished the contest with 265 yards of total offense, 171 of which came through the air. Guidry completed 11 of 20 passes for 81 yards while Jason Schlueter was 13-of-15 for 90 yards.

S&T, 3-3 on the season, returns home next Saturday to host Kentucky Wesleyan for Homecoming at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Game time will be at 1 p.m.

Miners withstand Pumas' rally to pick up victory

The Miner football team built a 21-point lead by the early stages of the third quarter, then withstood a furious Saint Joseph's rally to come away with a 38-29 victory on Hall of Fame Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Thanks to an exceptional first half effort, the Miners were able to build a 25-10 lead by the intermission, then drove 63 yards on their first possession of the second half to extend that lead to 31-10.

However, the Pumas scored 19 unanswered points to draw to within two midway through the fourth quarter, but after a two-point conversion attempt failed, the Miners were able to get an insurance touchdown to complete their third victory of the season.

After forcing Saint Joseph's to punt on its opening possession, the Miners put together an impressive nine-play, 83-yard drive for the first score of the game. S&T strung together six first downs on the drive -- never snapping on third down along the way -- and ended the drive on a five-yard scoring run by quarterback Jason Schlueter.

The Miner defense halted two Puma drives on its side of the 50 with interceptions after taking the lead, but the Pumas moved in front early in the second quarter when Terrance Freeman scored on a two-yard run.

S&T answered right back when Mike Greaving leaped above two Saint Joseph's defenders in the end zone to haul in a 43-yard scoring pass. The two-point conversion attempt failed, however, to leave the Miners up 12-7.

After Michael Binder kicked a 25-yard field goal to cut the lead to three, the Miners scored again on a big play. Binder's kickoff bounced over the heads of the Miner returners, but Zach Howard retrieved it on the six-yard line and ran right through the coverage team into the open field to go 94 yards for a touchdown.

S&T added to the lead when David Shields powered into the end zone with 2:16 to go in the half to give the Miners' their halftime lead. That score was set up by a 70-yard pass from Schlueter to Greaving that put the Miners at the Pumas' 10-yard line.

The Miners continued to add to the lead by taking the second half kickoff and driving 63 yards on 11 plays, capping the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Schlueter to Greaving.

Saint Joseph's clawed back into the contest by scoring on four straight possessions, getting two field goals from Binder and two touchdown passes from Mike Hladik to cut the lead to 31-29.

After his 15-yard scoring toss to Jashon Banks with 7:50 to play trimmed the lead to two, the Pumas tried to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but Hladik's pass to Scott Chapman came up short.

Howard returned the ensuing kickoff to the Puma 45, then Chad Shockley caught a 22-yard pass to get the Miners a first down. Moments later, the Pumas were flagged for pass interference on a third down play to give the Miners a first down at the six; Schlueter then hit Bryan Crider in the end zone to give S&T some breathing room.

Schlueter completed 20-of-28 for 279 yards and three scores, while Greaving had seven catches for 159 yards to lead the Miner receivers.

Saint Joseph's won the yardage battle in the contest with 430 yards to the Miners' 346, with Hladik throwing for 283 yards.

Defensively, Justin Butler led S&T with 12 tackles, while Brett Hanten had eight tackles and three pass breakups on the afternoon.

S&T (3-2) will head to the road next week to face South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.; the Coyotes are in their first year at the NCAA Division I level.

Miner struggles lead to defeat at hands of Butler

Missouri S&T outgained Butler by a 477-to-440 margin in yardage Saturday -- including a 380-207 advantage through the air -- but key mistakes throughout the afternoon led to a 41-15 loss to the visiting Bulldogs at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners were able to move the ball throughout the afternoon on Butler, but had two interceptions in Butler territory and also missed a field goal in the first half to stem scoring opportunities.

Meanwhile the Bulldogs, who had a 13-3 lead at intermission, scored touchdowns on all four of their second half possessions to pull away and drop the Miners to 2-2 on the year.

Butler set the tempo of the contest by driving 99 yards on 14 plays on its opening trip of the day for a touchdown. After Jason Schlueter pinned Butler at its own one-yard line on a punt, the Bulldogs moved down the field and took the lead on Ricky Trujillo's nine-yard scoring run.

S&T drove back down the field and reached the Bulldogs' 10-yard line, but Joe Drahos' 27-yard field goal attempt went wide to the left.

Butler extended its lead to 13-0 midway through the second quarter when Matt Kobli threw a seven-yard scoring pass to Stuart Harvey, then the Miners got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Drahos kicked a 24-yard field goal with a second to go before halftime.

The Bulldogs put together a lenghty scoring drive -- 78 yards on 13 plays and using nearly half of the third period -- to push its lead to 20-3 in the third quarter when Ryan Hitchcock scored on a one-yard run.

But the Miners came right back and drove 87 yards for their first touchdown of the afternoon, with Schlueter completing passes of 23 yards to Bryan Crider and 24 yards to Chad Shockley to set up a five-yard touchdown run by David Shields.

Butler answered the Miner score with a one-yard scoring run by Trujillo, then the Miners came right back and scored on a two-yard scoring pass from Schlueter to Crider. The Bulldogs scored again, however, when Kobli hit Eddie McHale down the sideline for a 32-yard scoring pass to make it 34-15.

The Miners quickly moved deep into Butler territory after that score when Schlueter connected with Zach Howard for a 43-yard play to the Bulldog 17, but had his next pass to the end zone intercepted by Tadd Dombart to end that chance.

Schlueter threw for a career-high 380 yards as he completed 32-of-43 passes on the afternoon. Shockley and Howard both went over the 100-yard mark in receiving yardage, as Shockley had a career-highs of 165 yards on his 11 catches and Howard finished with 111 on eight grabs.
Miners' Jordan lands GLFC Player of Week award

Jordan recorded 11 tackles, including seven solo stops, to pace the Miner defense in the victory. He also intercepted a pass -- a turnover the Miners converted into a touchdown -- and was credited with a pass breakup in the contest.

Jordan is a senior from St. Louis, Mo., and played at Hazelwood Central High School and for a year at the University of Northern Iowa before joining the Miner program.

It is the second week in succession that the Miners have had a player earn a weekly award from the GLFC, as David Shields landed the offensive player award last week.

Missouri S&T hosts Butler at 1 p.m. Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
