CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Missouri S&T junior Jordan Henry earned his second Great Lakes Valley Conference championship in the pole vault Saturday by winning the event at the GLVC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Henry cleared 16-0 3/4 to win the event over teammates Jared Anders and Peter Hollenbeck, who both went over the bar at 15-7 to take second and third, respectively. Henry, who has already met the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Championships two weeks from now, earned his other GLVC pole vault title at the 2006 outdoor meet.
The Miners also got an all-conference effort from Kal-El Waters-Jones in the triple jump as he came in second place with a mark of 46-9, barely missing the Division II provisional qualifying standard.
S&T also had a third place finish from Joffroi Holcombe in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:33.81, one of three third place efforts from the Miners Saturday.
Freshman sprinter Michael Wilson finished third in the 55-meter dash with a mark of 6.60 seconds in the finals, his best mark of the season in that event. Another freshman, Brendan Smith, had a third place finish of his own in the mile with a mark of 4:24.44 and later finished fifth in the 800-meters in 1:58.69. The Miners also got a fifth from Brandon Etzold in the mile with a mark of 4:26.41.
Holcombe added a sixth place finish in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:52.77 as did Paul Roland in the 400-meters in 1:58.70, Andrew Moore in the triple jump with a mark of 44-4 1/4 and Lucas Jaster in the shot put with a mark of 46-2 3/4, his best mark of the season in that event. Dan Hellwig placed seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 14-7 1/4.
Ian Packard also got a scoring spot for the Miners by placing eighth in the 200-meters in 22.67 seconds; he also had a time of 50.90 in the finals of the 400-meters to end up ninth.
S&T had fourth place showings from all three of its relay teams Saturday, with the 4x200 group of Charles Melton, Wilson, Brett Vessell and Thomas Sands posting a time of 1:32.99; the 4x400-meter quartet of Packard, Roland, Smith and Etzold finishing in a school record time of 3:23.11 and the distance medley group of Mike Renkowski, Bryan Hogan, Chris Teel and Thomas Green recording a mark of 10:39.03.
The Miners finished with 88 points in the meet, just behind the 90 posted by third place Lewis and well ahead of Saint Joseph's. Southern Illinois Edwardsville won the meet by 80 points over Indianapolis in its last appearance at the GLVC Indoor Championships before moving to NCAA Division I next season.
