WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Missouri S&T softball team opened its reconstructed spring break trip with a doubleheader split Wednesday, as they took the first of two games with West Alabama by the score of 7-3. The Tigers game two 4-1.
The doubleheader with West Alabama, as well as Thursday's at Lincoln Memorial, were brought about after the original games at Grand Valley State, Wayne State (Mich.) and Ashland were cancelled due to field conditions. S&T picked up the two mid-week doubleheaders to replace them prior to resuming conference play Saturday at Bellarmine.
S&T never trailed in the first game, scoring runs in each of the first three innings and tacking on single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Lady Miners put two runs across in the opening inning when Kandi Wieberg was able to score on a sacrifice fly on a ball caught by the second baseman, then Emily Tucker followed with an RBI single to bring in Rachel Wilkinson.
West Alabama scored in the bottom half of the inning, but Becca Kueny belted a leadoff homer in the second to put S&T up 3-1. The Lady Miners got two more runs in the third on RBI hits by Becky Davis and Melissa Ruth.
After the Tigers closed the margin to three after five innings, the Lady Miners got an unearned run in the sixth after a two-out error extended the inning for Tucker to drive in Wilkinson. Kueny then belted her second home run of the game in the seventh for the final margin.
Jen O'Hara got the win for the Lady Miners to improve to 6-0 on the season. Wilkinson had three of S&T's 12 hits, while Tucker and Kueny had two each.
In the nightcap, S&T was held scoreless until the sixth inning when Coley Naughton singled in Kristen Drage. West Alabama scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh off starter Ashley Wallingford.
Wieberg and Musselman had two hits apiece for S&T, which finished the day with a record of 13-10.
