Miners compete in final tuneup for GLVC meet

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- A number of Missouri S&T track and field competitors were in action Friday in a final tuneup meet before next weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.

Most of the contingent from the Miner track team was at the Central Missouri Classic, where the top finisher was Brendan Smith in the 800-meters with a time of 1:56.19. Smith finished 1.4 seconds out of first in his race.

The Miners also got a third place finish from Peter Hollenbeck in the pole vault with a mark of 14-9, while Dan Hellwig finished sixth at 14-3 1/2.

Throwers Josh Hesse, Jeremiah Johnson and Lucas Jaster were also in action at UCM, with Hesse posting marks of 45-11 1/4 in the weight throw and 42-4 in the shot put, Johnson a 44-7 1/2 in the shot and Jaster recording marks of 43-4 1/2 in the shot put and 41-5 3/4 in the weight throw.

Freshman Brandon Etzold took part in the 800-meters Friday at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, Neb., finishing seventh in his race with a time of 1:56.19.

The GLVC Championships take place March 1 in Crawfordsville, Ind.
