Softball team announces three early signings for 2009
University of Missouri-Rolla softball coach Don Kennedy has announced that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play softball at the university, which will be known as Missouri S&T starting on Jan. 1, for the 2009 season.
The three signees during the early signing period in November are Lauren Briggs, an outfield from Knob Noster (Mo.) High School; Lindsey DeForest, a second baseman from North Callaway High School in Kingdom City, Mo.; and Maggie Schroeder, a third baseman from Basehor-Linwood High School in Basehor, Kan.
LAUREN BRIGGS, an outfielder from Knob Noster High School in Knob Noster, Mo.: Briggs earned second-team all-conference honors after the past season, despite playing with a wrist injury throughout the year. She was a pitcher and shortstop at the high school level but will play the outfield for the Lady Miners. She is a slap hitter with good speed who has played with summer league teams in Sedalia (Havoc) and Columbia (Rattlers).
LINDSEY DEFOREST, a second baseman from North Callaway High School in Kingdom City, Mo.: DeForest earned first team all-state honors following the 2007 campaign and has also earned all-district and all-conference laurels after each of the last three seasons. She led North Callaway to a runner-up finish in the Missouri Class 3 state tournament this season and a 25-3 record, hitting .455 with 20 stolen bases. DeForest has also played with the Scrappers summer league team and currently plays for the Diamond Wildcats.
MAGGIE SCHROEDER, a third baseman from Basehor-Linwood High School in Basehor, Kan.: Schroeder was an all-conference selection at the shortstop position last season and is a four-year letterwinner on the varsity level. She has also played for the Kansas City Extreme summer team as a third baseman with a good arm and good speed.
