EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Lady Miners' first season of Great Lakes Valley Conference play came to an end on a down note Friday night, as Southern Indiana handed UMR a 3-0 loss in volleyball action.

The Screaming Eagles won the three games by scores of 30-15, 30-23 and 30-15 in a game they needed to win in their quest to make the conference tournament. USI moved into a tie for fourth place in the GLVC West with Drury with Friday's win.

After the Eagles won the opener, UMR hung tough in the early stages of game two and were down by one at 12-11 after a block by Maddie Owak and Ashlyn Balensiefer. USI pushed its lead back out only to see the Lady Miners draw to within six on a kill by Owak, but that was as close as UMR would get in that game. An early 8-0 run by the Eagles in the final game put them ahead for good.

Leandra Pelae led the Lady Miners with 10 kills in the contest, while Owak had six and Lisa Robinson finished with four. Balensiefer was credited with 20 assists while Pelae and Bridget Williams had 10 digs apiece.

UMR will conclude its inaugural season with a pair of matches Saturday against nationally-ranked teams in Kirksville, Mo. The Lady Miners will take on No. 17 Emporia State at 3 p.m. and then finish the year with a 7 p.m. contest against No. 7 Truman State. Truman beat Emporia State 3-2 Friday night.
