Lady Miners wrap up first volleyball season
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Lady Miners finished their first volleyball season Saturday night by dropping a 3-0 decision to seventh-ranked Truman State University.
UMR dropped the three games to the Bulldogs by scores of 30-15, 30-28 and 30-21.
After falling in the first game, UMR played Truman to a nip-and-tuck battle in the second game. The teams were tied at 16 and the Lady Miners stayed within two points until Truman scored three straight points to go up 24-20. UMR fought back and closed the gap to one at 28-27. Bridget Williams had a kill when Truman had game point to draw to within one again before the Bulldogs won the match on the next point.
In the third game, UMR took a 14-11 lead on a kill by Katie Herington. Lauren Summerville's kill moments later tied the game at 15 before the Bulldogs took the lead for good.
Leandra Pelae led UMR with 10 kills in the game while Herington finished with six. Ashlyn Balensiefer recorded 25 assists and Williams led UMR with 13 digs.
Earlier in the day, the Lady Miners dropped a 3-0 match to No. 17-ranked Emporia State in Pershing Arena, as the Hornets won by scores of 30-25, 30-18 and 30-8.
Pelae's kill early in game one gave UMR a 12-11 lead, then a service ace by Williams extended the lead to two. ESU scored the next three points to take the lead for good.
Pelae led UMR with eight kills while Jessica Laughary had seven; Balensiefer posted 32 assists and Williams had eight kills to lead the Lady Miners.
