A chilly, damp night at the UMR Soccer Field didn't keep the Lady Miners from finishing their season on a high note, as UMR posted a season-ending shutout victory for the second year in a row with a 2-0 win over Missouri Baptist Friday night.
The Lady Miners grabbed the early lead when Marci Byrd converted a penalty kick at the 16:42 mark, a chance she received after being taken down inside the penalty area.
UMR made that goal hold up for the better part of 60 minutes, until adding to the lead when a pair of seniors got in on the scoring. Beth Babb, one of five seniors playing in their last game Friday, got by her defender and had her shot stopped by MBU goalkeeper Meagan Roberts, but fellow senior Jaime Pierce followed up the play and knocked in the rebound to double UMR's lead.
The Lady Miners outshot Missouri Baptist 15-11 on the night, with Kelsey Kurilla and Catherine Swift combining for four saves in the shutout.
UMR finished the year with a 6-12-1 record, recording its most victories in a year since 2003.
