For the second year in a row, a freshman on the University of Missouri-Rolla baseball team has been honored by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Brandon Cogan was named to the all-conference first team as a utility player after an outstanding season in which he finished as the Miners' leading hitter. He was one of two Miners named to the all-league team Wednesday, as outfielder Gerad Fox was chosen to the All-GLVC second team.
Cogan split time between pitching and second base this season and ended the 2007 season with a .351 average and 13 runs batted in. On the mound, he was 3-2 with a 3.34 earned run average in 35 innings of work; he also posted a shutout in a 1-0 victory over Lewis in late March.
Last season, Thomas McCormick was named as the GLVC's top freshman; the honor this season went to Drury shortstop Joe Rohlfing.
Fox batted .320 out of the leadoff spot for the Miners with 13 runs batted in and a team-high 15 stolen bases. He was also solid in the field with just one error in 131 chances.
UMR also received another honor as outfielder Joe Montgomery was named to the academic all-district second team. Montgomery, a three-year member of the Miners, batted .260 with a home run -- an inside-the-park grand slam against Truman State -- and 19 runs batted in. He is majoring in computer and electrical engineering at UMR.
The Miners finished the 2007 season Sunday with a win at Northern Kentucky to end with a 20-27 record.
