CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- University of Missouri-Rolla senior Chris Carsten finished in 20th place in the shot put Friday at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, a day after placing 18th in the hammer throw competition.

As was the case Thursday, Carsten fouled on his first two throws before posting a legal throw in the third round of 49-9.

The winner in the shot put was the top-ranked individual coming into the meet, Ashland's Bryan Vickers, with a throw of 62-7 3/4 which was more than two feet better than the next-best mark.

Carsten had a throw of 147-6 in the third round of the hammer Thursday. The winner of the hammer was Kibwe Johnson of Ashland University, who had a winning mark of 222-8. Johnson entered the meet with the top mark in the nation in the hammer throw.

UMR will have two competitors in action Saturday, as Peter Hollenbeck will compete in the pole vault and Becca Kueny, the lone Lady Miner in the national meet, will look to repeat as an All-America in the javelin.
