SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Matt Campbell fired a two-hit shutout in the nightcap of a doubleheader Thursday, giving the Miners a 2-0 victory and a split of their doubleheader with Drury University.

The Panthers shut out the Miners 3-0 in game one of the Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill as a pair of Drury hurlers blanked the Miners on eight hits.

UMR got the lead in game two in the first inning when Gerad Fox singled to open the contest and eventually scored on Eaf Redden's two-out single to the opposite field.

The Miners extended their lead in the fifth when Owen Madison drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Yaimel Javier-Cury's hit to right.

Those would be all the runs that Campbell would need as he gave up just a double in the third to Joe Rohlfing and a single in the fourth to Tyler Goss. After the Goss hit, Campbell retired 16 straight hitters before walking Justin Skinner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The junior lefthander then got Goss to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the game and improve his record to 3-3 on the year.

UMR had seven hits in game two with Fox and Redden getting two apiece.

The Miners had runners on base in every inning in the opener, but couldn't push a run across and stranded 11 in the game.

Drury scored single runs off starter Mark Phillips in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Rohlfing's RBI single in the third put the Panthers in the lead, then RBI hits by Michael York in the fourth and Jason Hall in the sixth accounted for the other two Drury runs.

The Miners loaded the bases in the seventh off reliever Sam Pirtle, but Robbie Martin, who has been one of UMR's hottest hitters of late, lined out to first baseman Tony Lewis to end the game.

Cody Bass and Joe Montgomery each had two hits in the first game as the Miners had eight overall. Phillips took the loss despite allowing only two earned runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

UMR (14-18 overall, 7-15 GLVC) will host Wisconsin-Parkside this weekend starting with a noon doubleheader on Satruday. The Miners and Rangers will also play a single game Sunday at noon before Drury comes to Rolla for a single contest on Tuesday.
