Cougar pitchers chill Miner bats at key moments
| Tavish Hill |
Tavish Hill pitched well for the Miners Saturday, but couldn't get the offensive support to back his outing as Southern Illinois Edwardsville came away with a 2-0 victory over UMR on a chilly afternoon at the UMR Baseball Field.
Hill gave up just two runs on seven hits on the day -- allowing single runs in the first and ninth innings, but the Miners were unable to come up with the big hit when the opportunities were there as they fell to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
SIUE (8-4, 4-2 GLVC) got a run in the first when James Kulovitz drove in Ryan Czyz with a two-out single. UMR got two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning, but Cougar pitcher Adam Tallman got a strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Miners also left runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings, then got their leadoff man on in the seventh but had that erased by a double play.
UMR got a one-out single from Josh Hanrahan in the eighth, but he was stranded when SIUE rightfielder Daniel Thomson ran down Thomas McCormick's drive to end the inning. The Miners had another chance in the ninth when Eaf Redden doubled with one out and Robbie Martin delivered a two-out single, but reliever Adam Schneider retired Kris Hamilton to end the game.
The Miners had seven hits on the day, with McCormick, Redden and Hanrahan getting two apiece.
UMR and SIUE will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
