Tyrone Smith was selected Tuesday as the “Athlete of the Week” for men's track and field by the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Smith earned the award thanks to a pair of winning efforts over the weekend at the Central Missouri Classic and a seasonal-best time in a third event.

Smith, a senior from North Chicago, Ill. won the long jump competition with a mark of 24-9 in an event in which he has already automatically qualified for next month’s NCAA Division II Championships, then won the triple jump with a top mark of 45-7. In addition, Smith’s time of 7.08 seconds in the 60-meter dash was his best time in that event for the 2007 season.

Heading into this weekend’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championships, Smith is ranked first in the long jump (his best mark is 25-2 3/4), second in the triple jump and ninth in the 55-meter dash.
