Matt Hug, a junior on the University of Missouri-Rolla swimming team, has been named as the national swimmer of the week for NCAA Division II by CollegeSwimming.com for his performance over the past weekend.
At the University of Indianapolis Invitational, which the Miners won by a sizeable margin as a team, Hug won three freestyle events. He claimed first in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:42.85, the 500-freestyle in 4:39.71 and the 1,650-yard free in 16:16.94.
All three of the times were under the NCAA Division II B-cut standard, but Hug has already qualifed automatically for the national meet that will take place in March in Buffalo, N.Y.
It is the second time in Hug's career that he has won the weekly award from CollegeSwimming.com, as he was also honored during his freshman year at UMR.
