UMR places 5th at GLVC Cross Country Championships

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Miner cross country team ended up in fifth place Saturday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships held at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a two-spot improvement over a year ago.
UMR finished with a total of 122 points, seven behind meet host SIUE, with its highest individual finisher being Joffroi Holcombe in 18th place with a time of 26:36 over eight kilometers.
Chris Thielker finished 21st in 26:49, while Gary Black came in 26th in 27:02 and Andrew Ropp immediately behind him in 27:05.
The Miners' top five was rounded out by Chris Murray, who came in 30th place with a time of 27:13. UMR had its top five runners across the finish line before all but two of the 10 teams in the meet, but the top four finishers all had at least one runner in the 10 overall and three teams had at least two among the top 10.
Southern Indiana won the team competition with a total of 63 points, while Lewis' Andy Trimble won the individual competition with a time of 25:21 to win by 16 seconds.
UMR's next competition will take place Nov. 4 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at Wisconsin-Parkside.
