Andy Held, a redshirt freshman for the University of Missouri-Rolla men’s soccer team, has been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s “Player of the Week” after helping the Miners to a 2-0-1 record in the past seven days.

Held, a native of Alton, Ill., scored four goals in the three games last week to help the Miners move up to sixth place in the GLVC standings with three conference games to play, the first of which is Wednesday in the home finale against No. 9-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

He scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Miners’ 3-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Oct. 4, scoring with just under six minutes to go in the first half to give UMR a 2-0 lead at the time (the Miners’ third goal came in the final minute of play).

Held followed that performance with a natural hat trick in UMR’s 4-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. Held scored the Miners’ first three goals in the game, two in the first half and the third in the 65th minute of action, to register the first three-goal game by a Miner player since 2001. The Miners closed the weekend by playing to a 2-2 tie against Southern Indiana.
