Brandon Landry

UMR senior wide receiver Brandon Landry has been selected as the Great Lakes Football Conference offensive "Player of the Week" for his role in the Miners' 35-20 win over Butler Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Landry caught four passes in the game for 106 yards and two touchdowns, including the score that put the Miners ahead for good. He had two catches for 70 yards in the Miners' second scoring drive, catching a 41-yard pass to put the Miners into Butler territory and wrapping up the drive with a 29-yard touchdown reception late in the first half.

In the third quarter, he had a catch that was good for a first down and then caught his second scoring pass of the afternoon at the conclusion of that possession, as he hauled in a 24-yard scoring pass from Joe Winters on a fourth-and-10 play to give UMR a 21-13 lead.

Landry is a senior from Fairfield, Calif., and currently ranks as the Miners' second-leading receiver on the season with 42 catches for 650 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Miners top Butler to complete homestand sweep

landry2-vs-butler.jpg
Brandon Landry

After spending the better part of the first month of the 2006 season on the road, the Miner football team has certainly found the home field to its liking.

UMR broke over the .500 mark for the first time this season as it completed a sweep of its three-game homestand with a 35-20 victory Saturday afternoon over Butler University. The Miners -- who had been in a pattern of winning and losing two straight games all season -- won for the third time in a row to improve to 5-4 heading into their final road game of the year.

The Miners really never got untracked offensively until late in the first half. Butler took a 7-0 lead on Brian Holthaus' two-yard run with 1:16 left in the first quarter, then the Miners tied it when they got great field position at Butler's 37-yard line after a short punt. UMR scored five plays later when Joe Winters connected with Bryan Crider for an eight-yard scoring pass.

Jordan Quiroz gave the Bulldogs a brief 10-7 lead when he kicked a 36-yard field goal with 2:51 remaining in the half, but UMR answered that with its first lengthy drive of the afternoon. Winters hit Landry for two big plays on the drive, the first being a 41-yard play over the middle that put UMR on the Bulldog 21. After a sack and an incomplete pass, Winters went to Landry again for a 29-yard scoring pass as the Miner receiver dove just inside the pylon to give UMR its first lead at 14-10.

Butler closed to within one when Quiroz connected on another field goal, this one from 32 yards away, but the Miners responded by scoring twice in a span of just over two minutes to build their biggest lead of the day.

The first score came when the Miners elected to go for it on fourth down at the Bulldogs' 24, whereas Winters was able to elude the Butler rush and throw a strike to Landry just in front of the goal line; Landry took it across to give UMR a 21-13 lead with 1:44 left in the third quarter.

The Miner defense, which had another solid performance, forced a three-and-out and Ashton Gronewold returned the ensuing punt 69 yards for a touchdown to increase the Miner advantage to 28-13.

UMR turned the ball over on its next offensive possession at its own 33, which allowed the Bulldogs to get closer as T.J. Brown threw a 27-yard scoring pass to Aaron Shaw with 10:23 to go. However, the Miners benefitted from a couple of pass interference penalties on the Bulldogs -- one on a third down play -- to get their clinching touchdown.

The first interference penalty kept the Miner drive going, then the second put the ball on the Butler 14. Two plays later, Winters hit Gronewold on a 10-yard scoring pass on a fade route to wrap up the scoring.

The Miner defense held the Bulldogs to 219 yards of total offense on the afternoon and had a season-high six quarterback sacks. Linebacker Avian Jordan had 10 tackles for the Miners and Matt Loula was credited with of the six sacks. In all, the Miners made 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage Saturday.

Winters finished the day with 20 completions in 34 attempts for 271 yards and four touchdowns, increasing his season total of scoring passes to 32. Gronewold caught six passes for 77 yards, while adding 165 return yards for a 242-yard day in all-purpose yardage. Landry had 106 yards on his four receptions.

UMR will face Wayne State next Saturday in a 3 p.m. game in Wayne, Neb.

ST. PETERS, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Rolla swimming team had nine first-place performances and came away victorious in the team standings as well Saturday in a quadrangular meet with Lindenwood, Saint Louis and Rose-Hulman held at the Rec Plex in St. Peters.

The Miners easily outdistanced their competition, scoring 132 points to nearly double the score of 67 posted by runner-up Lindenwood. Saint Louis finished with 53 points and Rose-Hulman with seven.

UMR got winning efforts that also surpassed the B-cut times for the NCAA Division II Championships from Andrew Trowbridge in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:38.95, Matt Hug in the 200-freestyle in 1:42.94 and Mark Chamberlain in the 50-freestyle in 21.42 seconds. Rangers' second half rally ends Miner soccer season

Brandon Moore

KENOSHA, Wis. -- UMR probably wishes that the halftime intermission never took place Sunday.

The Miners were riding a wave of momentum from two goals late in the first half and had 19th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside primed for a first-round exit from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on its home field for the second straight season.

However, the Rangers were able to regroup at halftime and scored three times in a span of 18 minutes in the latter half of the game to come away with a 3-2 victory over the Miners Sunday in the opening round contest of the GLVC Tournament.

The first half was tightly contested until UMR scored twice in a span of 2:12 late in the period to take a 2-0 lead at the break. Will Kirby got the Miners on the board when he scored off an assist from Brandon Moore at the 37:04 mark, then Moore scored himself off an assist from Justin Lightner at 39:16 to give UMR its two-goal advantage.

Wisconsin-Parkside turned the tide of the contest right after the game resumed, getting goals from Johnson Thoa at 50:15 and 57:44 to tie the score. The Rangers completed the comeback 10 minutes later when Mike Buffolo scored at the 67:45 mark and held on to earn a trip to Edwardsville, Ill., on Friday to face Northern Kentucky in the semifinals.

The Rangers outshot the Miners 10-5 in the game and had a 7-2 advantage in the second half. Mike McNamee was credited with seven saves in the contest.

UMR finished its season with a record of 9-9-2.

Miners end Homecoming drought by topping SNU

padilla-vs-snu.jpg
Matt Padilla

It had been 13 years since the Miners had won a Homecoming football game, but UMR got just enough done at the right time to put an end to that streak Saturday afternoon.

Joe Winters threw for 371 yards and two scores, including a 55-yard touchdown pass to Mike Greaving in the third quarter, allowing UMR to come from behind for a 17-14 win over Southern Nazarene at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. It was UMR's first win on Homecoming since it beat Southwest Baptist in 1993.

Things didn't start out so well for the Miners, as the visitors from Oklahoma took the opening kickoff and drove 61 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. Maurice Upshaw's three-yard run gave the Crimson Storm a 7-0 lead right out of the gate.

After two scoreless possessions to open the game, the Miners got a spark from Jon Iglehart's blocked field goal late in the quarter. On the very next play, Winters hit Matt Padilla on a swing pass that he took the distance for a game-tying 75-yard touchdown reception to bring the Miners even.

UMR took the lead early in the second quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Tim Valencia and would take that 10-7 lead into the locker room as the defense got two stops in Miner territory before the half ended. Brian Jordan picked off a pass at the UMR 10 to end one drive, then SNU quarterback Tyler Schneider was stopped short of a first down on a fourth down play at the Miner 15.

The Crimson Storm took the lead on a 17-yard scoring pass from Schneider to Zack Bridwell at the 5:47 mark of the third quarter to cap an 84-yard scoring drive. But the Miners answered that score by scoring on the fourth play after getting the ball back on what turned out to be the game's decisive play.

Winters lofted a pass on the sideline to Greaving, who hauled it in and then eluded two Crimson Storm defenders to reach the end zone to give UMR a 17-14 lead. It was part of a huge day for the sophomore wide receiver as he caught seven passes for a career-high 150 yards, a resume that included a tremendous one-handed catch in the first half and a key catch in the fourth quarter to lock up the win for the Miners.

After Greaving's score, the Miner defense stiffened and held SNU to just one first down on its final four possessions. UMR forced a punt with 4:42 remaining and then picked up three first downs to lock up the win.

Winters finished the game with 24 completions in 40 attempts for 371 yards and the two scores, with Ashton Gronewold also going over the 100-yard mark in receptions with 122 on nine catches. UMR had only 14 yards rushing in the game (most of the losses were the result of six quarterback sacks), but did get 42 yards on the ground from David Shields in his most extensive playing time of the year.

Avian Jordan led the Miner defense with eight tackles.

UMR evened its record at 4-4 with the win and will wrap up the three-game homestand next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Butler at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Seniors lead dominant performance in Lady Miner finale

schmucker-vs-usi.jpg
Stephanie Schmucker

The final home game of the season turned into a showcase for the five Lady Miner seniors who were playing on the home pitch for the last time, as UMR shut out William Woods 3-0 Friday night at the UMR Soccer Field.

Danielle Lyman had a goal and an assist, Maggie Thompson had a goal and Brittany Parker, who on Thursday was named as the first team goalkeeper in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, got help from defenders Stephanie Schmucker and Emily O'Nan to post a combined shutout with Catherine Swift.

Lyman earned her assist on the first Lady Miner goal at the 17:56 mark, as she made a cross that Janine Einhellig headed in. Einhellig returned the favor just over 13 minutes later, as she sent a pass across the box for Lyman to redirect past Owl goalkeeper Kristen Antle.

At the 38:12 mark, Jaime Pierce made a pass through the defense to Thompson, who took off on a short breakaway and finished it with a shot to the far side of the net to give UMR a 3-0 advantage by halftime.

The Lady Miners were never really challenged by the Owls in the opening half as they held a 13-1 advantage in shots. Parker made the save on that shot and one in the second half before turning the game over to Swift with 28 minutes to go. Parker did play in the field for a period of time until each of the five Lady Miners seniors were brought out of the game one by one.

UMR finished the game with 17 shots to William Woods' six.

The Lady Miners finished the season with a 4-13-1 record but had four wins in their last five games. UMR was tenth in the 14-team Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 3-8-1 mark.

Brandon Moore

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The UMR men's soccer team got a second half goal from Brandon Moore to salvage a 1-1 tie in its regular season finale Friday afternoon at Truman State.

Moore scored an unassisted goal at the 58:47 mark to even the score of a game in which the Miners controlled after the intermission. However, Moore's goal turned out to be the only one of the final 45 minutes of regulation time and 20 minutes of overtime even though UMR outshot the Bulldogs 16-3 during that stretch.

The Miners (9-8-2) held a 21-9 advantage in shots for the game and got 12 on goal. Mike McNamee ended up making one save for the afternoon.

Truman's goal came from Matt McCarthy at the 12:26 mark in the first half.

UMR will face Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday in an opening round game in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Game time will be at noon in Kenosha, Wis.

Lady Miners' Parker lands first team All-GLVC honors

parker-vs-usi.jpg
Brittany Parker

Although the Lady Miner soccer team wasn't able to make the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, the league's coaches certainly recognized the work that Brittany Parker has done in goal for the Lady Miners this season.

The senior goalkeeper from Johnston, Iowa was named to the All-GLVC first team at her position Thursday, making Parker UMR's first player to earn all-conference laurels in all four seasons at the school. Parker was a second-team selection in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association as a freshman and an honorable mention pick in her sophomore year, then earned second-team all-league honors last year in UMR's first season as a member of the GLVC.

During the 2006 season -- which will conclude for the Lady Miners Friday night when they host William Woods at 7:30 p.m. at the UMR Soccer Field -- Parker has posted a 1.45 goals against average with 76 saves and one shutout in 1,367 minutes of playing time. For the season, the Lady Miners have allowed more than two goals in a game just twice in 17 contests.

Parker has nine career shutouts, which ranks fifth on the career list at UMR, and 410 saves which is good for third on the UMR all-time list. She enters her collegiate finale with a career goals against average of 1.78.

Regular season champion Quincy swept all of the major awards given out by the GLVC, as Becky Fleming was named as the league's top offensive player and top freshman, Laura Gentry was selected as the top defensive player and coach Dave Musso earned "Coach of the Year" honors.

held-vs-qu.jpg
Andy Held

Andy Held, who ranks second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in goals and points, is one of two players who have been honored by the GLVC for their play during the 2006 season.

Held was named to the All-GLVC second team Wednesday as he is in the midst of a season in which he has scored 11 times for a Miner team that will be playing in the conference tournament. Of Held's 11 goals on the season, four of them have been game-winning tallies.

Held, a redshirt freshman from Alton, Ill., has 22 points on the season with those 11 goals.

The other Miner honored was senior defender Derek Pelate, who has anchored the Miner defense throughout the year and has stood out despite missing four games with an injury. Pelate, who is from Edwardsville, Ill., also has a goal and two assists on the season and was named to the All-GLVC team as an honorable mention selection.

Bojan Jovicic of Wisconsin-Parkside, the fourth-ranked scorer in NCAA Division II, was named as the league's offensive "Player of the Year," while Southern Illinois Edwardsville midfielder John Matthews was named as the defensive "Player of the Year." Northern Kentucky gained the other two major awards, as forward Braden Bishop was named as the league's top freshman and John Basalyga was selected as the "Coach of the Year."

UMR, the No. 6 seed for this weekend's conference tournament, will play at Truman State Friday at 2 p.m. before opening GLVC Tournament play Sunday at UW-Parkside in a noon contest.

University of Missouri-Rolla cornerback Jon Iglehart has been named as the Great Lakes Football Conference's defensive "Player of the Week" after helping lead the Miners to a 21-14 win Saturday over Austin Peay at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Iglehart finished the game with seven tackles, six of which were unassisted, one tackle for a loss and a pass breakup. The Miners shut out APSU in the second half while holding the Governors to just 86 yards of total offense. Austin Peay had only 297 yards on the afternoon against UMR and completed less than 50 percent of its passing attempts.

Iglehart is a senior from Oakland, Calif., and came to UMR by way of Laney College.

The Miners (3-4) will host Southern Nazarene Saturday at 1 p.m.

Miners gain spot in GLVC Tournament with win over UIndy

Mike McNamee

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- With its playoff fate in its own hands, the University of Missouri-Rolla men's soccer team took care of earning its place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament all by itself.

The Miners came away with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis to put themselves in the GLVC Tournament for the second time in as many years. UMR will go into the tournament as the No. 6 seed and will open play in the eight-team event on Sunday (Oct. 22) on the road against No. 3 seed Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Rangers beat the Miners 3-0 when the teams met in Rolla Sept. 24.

In Sunday's game, the Miners got their first goal on an own goal by the Greyhounds, when a headed ball by a UIndy defender eluded Greyhound goalkeeper Matt Spaulding at the 22:23 mark. UMR added an insurance goal in the second half when Nick Landon tapped in a pass from Justin Lightner at 58:26 to give the Miners a two-goal advantage.

Even though the Greyhounds outshot the Miners 14-12 in the game, the defense was able to keep most of the shots away from UMR goalkeeper Mike McNamee. Only two of the 14 Indianapolis attempts were on goal and McNamee turned both of them away to record his fourth shutout of the season.

UMR, now 9-8-1 overall, finished 7-5-1 in GLVC play to end up in sole possession of sixth place. The Miners will play Friday at Truman State (2 p.m. start) prior to their GLVC Tournament opener at UW-Parkside on Sunday.

Greyhounds halt Lady Miner winning streak at three

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Lady Miner soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday as Indianapolis' Sarah Jones scored in the 69th minute to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 win over UMR in the Great Lakes Valley Conference finale for both teams.

The Lady Miners were trying to spoil the Greyhounds' hopes of hosting a home game in the conference tournament and were able to get the score tied on Janine Einhellig's goal late in the first half, but Jones was able to redirect a crossing pass from Alli Opfer to break the 1-1 deadlock.

Indianapolis grabbed a 1-0 lead Ashley Seehase's goal at 24:42, but Einhellig took advantage of a misplay by the Greyhounds on a free kick, as the ball bounced in the box and she got a head on it to get it past Abby Tracy.

The Greyhounds had a 12-4 edge in shots on the afternoon; UMR goalkeeper Brittany Parker was able to make four saves in the contest for UMR, which fell to 3-13-1 overall and ended its second year of GLVC play with a 3-8-1 mark.

UMR finished in 10th place in the 14-team league race, an improvement of three spots over last year.

The Lady Miners will finish the 2006 season Friday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against William Woods at the UMR Soccer Complex.

Miners get a defensive assist to bump off Governors

padilla-vs-apsu.jpg
Matt Padilla

Throughout the 2006 season, the Miner offense has generated the headlines while the defense has batted with inconsistency.

On Saturday, the roles were reversed somewhat as the defensive unit shut out Austin Peay in the second half, allowing the Miners to come away with a 21-14 win over the Governors at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

With the game tied at 14 heading into the second half, the Miners held the Governors to 86 yards of total offense in the second half of play with the longest drive covering just 29 yards. That was enough to allow the offense to get the one score it needed to decide the game, as Joe Winters hit freshman wideout Chad Shockley with a seven-yard scoring pass midway through the third quarter for the go-ahead score.

Early in the contest, the offense missed two golden opportunities to score. Kevis Buckley fumbled away the opening kickoff to the Miners at the APSU 23, putting the Miners in scoring position right away. However, the drive stalled at the six and then Tim Valencia's 29-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

UMR drove back into the Governors' red zone again on its next possession, but Valencia had another field goal attempt blocked to leave the game scoreless. The Miners did get points on their next possession, however, as they drove 59 yards for a score when Winters connected with Brandon Landry on a six-yard scoring pass with 1:30 left in the opening quarter.

Austin Peay had its most productive quarter of the day against the Miner defense in the second period, racking up 173 yards and both of its touchdowns. The Governors got on the scoreboard on a one-yard scoring run by Chris Fletcher, then completed a 93-yard scoring drive the next time they got the ball when Lanis Frederick caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Mark Cunningham.

UMR answered the Governors' scoring drive with one of their own, taking advantage of a good kickoff return by Ashton Gronewold and three complete passes from Winters to set up a four-yard scoring run by Matt Padilla to tie the game with 2:26 remaining in the half.

The Miners marched into Governor territory again to open the second half, but an interception in the end zone on a fourth down play ended that drive. But after the defense forced a three-and-out for APSU, the Miners started what turned out to be the decisive drive of the contest.

A 20-yard completion to Mike Greaving put UMR in Austin Peay territory, then Winters had a 15-yard run to move the Miners inside the Governors' 10-yard line. Three plays later, Winters hit a sliding Shockley in the front of the end zone for the go-ahead score.

The Governors moved into UMR territory twice in their final three drives, but were forced to punt on the first one and then couldn't take advantage of a 33-yard punt return by Frederick on the final drive.

Fletcher managed to get a first down on a fourth-and-one play to keep the drive going, but the UMR defense denied the Governors another set of downs after that. Faced with a fourth-and-five, the Miners forced an incompletion on a pass from Cunningham to Jon Sanders and were able to get one first down in order to run the clock out.

Winters, who ended up as UMR's leading rusher in the game with 48 yards, completed 29 of 44 passes for 265 yards and increased his seasonal touchdown total to 26 with the two scoring passes. Landry caught 10 of the passes for 68 yards, while Gronewold, who is second in NCAA Division II in receptions, hauled in seven balls on the afternoon. The seven catches by Gronewold allowed him to break the UMR career record for receptions that was previously held by Bob Somerville; the Miners' junior wideout now has 163 catches in his time at UMR.

However, Gronewold did not score a touchdown in the game and saw his streak of games with at least one score end at 10.

Defensively, linebackers Garyion Turner and Justin Butler made eight tackles apiece, while Brian Jordan picked off a pass that set the Miners up on their initial scoring drive in the first quarter.

UMR, 3-4 on the season, will play host to Southern Nazarene next Saturday for Homecoming. Game time will be at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Miners draw closer to playoff spot with win over Pumas

Andy Held

RENSSELAER, Ind. -- The UMR men's soccer team drew a step closer to landing a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoffs Friday night with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's.

The victory improved the Miners, 8-8-1 overall, to 6-5-1 in GLVC play with one game remaining. The Miners are currently tied for seventh place with Drury with identical .542 winning percentages as Drury played Wisconsin-Parkside to a 1-1 tie Friday night. A win or a tie by the Miners in their league finale will get them into the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Miners close the season Sunday at Indianapolis while the Panthers play host to Lewis and Missouri-St. Louis, a 2-0 loser Friday at UIndy, will play at Saint Joseph's. The Rivermen fell behind UMR and Drury in the standings after Friday's contests.

UMR could finish with as high as the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament if it wins its game Sunday and Drury can knock off Lewis on the final day of conference play. The Miners would be tied with Drury in terms of winning percentage, but UMR holds the tiebreaker based on its 1-0 win over the Panthers last month.

In Friday's contest, UMR got two goals from Andy Held -- his 10th and 11th of the season -- and a tally from Nick Landon to get the win.

Held opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:49 mark with assists from Will Kirby and Derek Pelate, who was seeing his first action since suffering an injury on Oct. 1 at Rockhurst. Saint Joseph's, whose head coach, Eric Rue, resigned on Thursday, got the score even at 29:36 on a goal from John Grigorakis.

However, Landon broke the tie with an unassisted goal at 77:10, then Held added an insurance goal at 85:15 off an assist from Alvaro Lopez.

UMR outshot the Pumas 19-7 in the game, as Miner goalkeeper Mike McNamee was credited with one save as Saint Joseph's managed to get only two of its seven shots on net.

The Miners and Indianapolis will face off in a game that will start at 11 a.m. Central time Sunday.

GLVC PLAYOFF SCENARIO (Through Oct. 13 games)

Overtime proves to be good for Lady Miners again

Erin Rouse

RENSSELAER, Ind. -- The Lady Miner soccer team probably don't want to play more than 90 minutes every night, but if that's what they need to win a game, they will gladly accept the extra time.

For the second straight game, UMR went beyond the 90-minute mark to get a victory, as Erin Rouse scored 4:21 into overtime to give the Lady Miners a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's for their third straight win.

Rouse converted the only shot taken by either team in overtime off a pass from Kim Morris to end the game. It was Rouse's second goal of the night and season, giving UMR its first three-game winning streak since its won four in a row in October 2003.

Saint Joseph's grabbed the lead on a goal by Rachel Cobean just 2:09 into play, but Rouse tied the score at the 20:24 mark when she scored off an assist from Sarah Herrig.

From there, it was up to UMR goalkeeper Brittany Parker to keep the Pumas at bay until the Lady Miners could score the winning goal. Saint Joseph's outshot UMR 15-9 in the game, including an 11-4 margin in the second half. Parker made nine saves in the game, six of them coming after the intermission.

UMR improved to 3-12-1 overall and 3-7-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play heading into its GLVC finale Sunday at Indianapolis.

SIUE puts Miners in must-win situation for playoffs

landon-vs-usi.jpg
Nick Landon

The Miners have played on break-even terms against the Great Lakes Valley Conference teams as a whole, but their biggest struggles have come against the conference's elite teams.

Wednesday night was another case of that as No. 8-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville routed the Miners 5-0 at the UMR Soccer Field, claiming at least a share of the GLVC regular season title in the process and putting the Miners into a must-win situation this weekend when they head to Indiana to finish conference play.

The Cougars put three of the goals on the board in the opening half, starting with Mike Banner's goal at the 11:43 mark when he ripped a shot through the outstretched arms of UMR goalkeeper Mike McNamee. John Matthews scored after he got to a loose ball in the box after a free kick to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead at 29:14, then Rob Ridder scored the first of his two goals on the night just 4:37 later.

Ridder and Mike Zaegel scored goals 2:06 apart in the second half to round out the scoring.

SIUE (10-3-3, 10-2-1 GLVC) outshot the Miners (7-8-1, 5-5-1 GLVC) by a 13-9 margin for the night, but had nine shots on goal to UMR's five. Nick Landon had two of the five shots on net for the Miners, who got four saves from McNamee in the contest.

UMR will face Saint Joseph's (1-11-3, 0-8-2 GLVC) Friday at 5 p.m. in Rensselaer, Ind., before closing league play Sunday at Indianapolis.

Miners picked down in pack in GLVC pre-season poll

The University of Missouri-Rolla men's basketball team was tabbed for a last place finish in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division for the upcoming 2006-07 season in the pre-season coaches poll released Wednesday.

UMR, which failed to win a game in conference play last season in its first year in the GLVC, received 10 points from the coaches in the division. The Miners had just one less point than Missouri-St. Louis and five fewer than Rockhurst, who was picked in the fifth spot in the poll.

The four teams that finished in a tie for the regular season title in the division were picked to finish in those spots again. Southern Indiana, whose three first place votes were the most that any of them received, was picked to win the GLVC West this year.

The team that beat USI in the Great Lakes Regional finals, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, was picked second followed by Quincy and Drury.

Northern Kentucky picked up six of the seven first place votes to garner the top spot in the GLVC East this year. The Norse were followed by Wisconsin-Parkside, Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine for the top four spots in the divisional race.

The GLVC East was rounded out by Lewis, Indianapolis and defending conference champion Saint Joseph's, who graduated all of its starters from last year and enters this season with a new head coach.

UMR (2-25 last year) opens practice Sunday for the start of the 2006-07 season. The Miners will play exhibition games at Arkansas State on Nov. 1 and at the University of Missouri on Nov. 3 before their Nov. 15 season opener at home against Rhema Bible.

Lady Miners tabbed for fourth in pre-season basketball poll

The University of Missouri-Rolla women's basketball team was picked to finish in fourth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division in the pre-season coaches poll released today.

UMR, which finished 17-11 overall and 10-9 in the GLVC in its first season as a member of the conference last year, went on to reach the semifinals of the conference tournament where it lost to Drury after posting an opening round win over Lewis.

Drury was picked to repeat as the GLVC West champion and was followed in the pre-season rankings by Quincy and Southern Illinois Edwardsville, who missed the playoffs last year; all three of those schools got at least one first place vote. UMR landed in fourth behind SIUE with 19 points, followed by Southern Indiana, Missouri-St. Louis and Rockhurst.

Defending tournament champion Northern Kentucky was tabbed as the favorite in the GLVC East, with Bellarmine, Lewis and Kentucky Wesleyan picked in the next three spots. The East Division was rounded out with Indianapolis in fifth, Saint Joseph's in sixth and Wisconsin-Parkside in last.

UMR will open practice Sunday evening for the 2006-07 season, which will get underway with an exhibition game Nov. 10 against Gold Star at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The regular season opener for the Lady Miners is set for Nov. 17 at home against Wayne State (Mich.).

Held named as GLVC's "Player of Week" in men's soccer

held-vs-kwc.jpg
Andy Held

Andy Held, a redshirt freshman for the University of Missouri-Rolla men’s soccer team, has been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s “Player of the Week” after helping the Miners to a 2-0-1 record in the past seven days.

Held, a native of Alton, Ill., scored four goals in the three games last week to help the Miners move up to sixth place in the GLVC standings with three conference games to play, the first of which is Wednesday in the home finale against No. 9-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

He scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Miners’ 3-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Oct. 4, scoring with just under six minutes to go in the first half to give UMR a 2-0 lead at the time (the Miners’ third goal came in the final minute of play).

Held followed that performance with a natural hat trick in UMR’s 4-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. Held scored the Miners’ first three goals in the game, two in the first half and the third in the 65th minute of action, to register the first three-goal game by a Miner player since 2001. The Miners closed the weekend by playing to a 2-2 tie against Southern Indiana.

Ryan's OT goal gives Lady Miners second straight win

The Lady Miners celebrate after Brooke
Ryan's game-winning goal in overtime

Usually the number 13 is considered an unlucky number. But after going 13 games this season without a win to start the season, the Lady Miners have now done something they haven't accomplished in 13 months -- wins in back-to-back games.

Brooke Ryan scored her second goal of the game and third of the weekend with 4:13 remaining in the second overtime period, giving UMR a 2-1 win over Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon at the UMR Soccer Field.

The win, which followed a 3-1 win over Kentucky Wesleyan Friday, gives the Lady Miners consecutive wins since early in the 2005 season when they beat Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western.

UMR controlled play for much of the first half and scored the only goal in the first 45 minutes when Ryan took a feed from Sarah Herrig and put a shot from about 10 yards away past USI goalkeeper Meagan Homolla at the 27:35 mark.

The Lady Miners held that advantage for nearly 50 minutes, until the Eagles' Kara Georgeff sent a pass to Heather DeLonga for the tying goal at 76:18. The Eagles later had a chance to get the potential winning goal, but Rebecca Cripe's shot from inside the box was stopped by Lady Miner goalkeeper Brittany Parker with a foot save.

After the Eagles had taken the first five shots in overtime -- four of which were on goal -- the Lady Miners made their only shot in the overtime session count. Danielle Lyman hit a corner kick into the box and that was cleared out, but Lyman put the ball back across the box to Ryan, who hit a shot past Homolla to her right for the game-winner.

USI had a 19-18 edge in shot, but the Lady Miners had 11 shots on goal to the Eagles' 10. Parker played a solid game in goal as she finished with nine saves.

UMR (2-12-1, 2-7-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will head to the road for its final two GLVC contests, starting Friday at Saint Joseph's (2-12-0, 2-9-0 GLVC) in Rensselaer, Ind.

Miners end in tie with USI, but move up in standings

moore-vs-usi.jpg

The Miners didn't exactlly get their desired result Sunday, but nonetheless, was still able to move up two spots in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.

UMR played to a 2-2 tie with Southern Indiana at the UMR Soccer Field, as a pair of defensive mistakes led to both Eagle goals. The Miners were able to overcome a deficit twice to draw even, but could never get into the lead against the Eagles.

Southern Indiana scored first when Evan Stoll stole a pass to the middle of the field and put a shot past UMR goalkeeper Mike McNamee at the 10:31 mark. The Miners tied the game nearly 25 minutes later when they took advantage of a foul call on USI, as Nick Landon got to a ball that initially stopped and scored the game-tying goal.

The Eagles regained the lead just 1:27 into the second half, when the Miners made another defensive error on a ball that went into the box. With McNamee away from the goal trying to clear a ball out, the ball came back to Matt Vossmer who hit a shot that ricocheted off the far post and into the net to give USI a 2-1 lead.

UMR drew even again at the 59:57 mark, as Brandon Moore hooked a corner kick through the outstretched hands of Eagle goalie Jake Bryan.

Neither team could score again, however, over the final 30 minutes of regulation time and 20 minutes of overtime.

UMR finished with a 27-15 edge in shots, with McNamee being credited with five saves on the afternoon.

With the tie and losses by Drury and Indianapoolis on Sunday, the Miners moved up into sixth place in the GLVC standings with three games to play. The top eight teams will make the GLVC Tournament.

UMR, 7-7-1 overall and 6-5-1 in GLVC play, will play its final home game Wednesday when it hosts ninth-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville (9-3-3, 9-2-1 GLVC) in a 7 p.m. game. The Cougars beat Saint Joseph's Sunday to take over sole possession of first place in the conference race.

Missed chances prove costly to Miners in loss to Bulldogs

landry-vs-lu.jpg
Brandon Landry

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Missed opportunities became the undoing for the Miners Saturday, as Southwestern Oklahoma State came away with a 31-29 win over UMR.

The Miners were plagued by two blocked kicks, a missed scoring opportunity in the SWOSU red zone and the chances to get key stops as they fell to 2-4 on the year with their second straight loss.

UMR got off to a fast start, as Joe Winters drove the Miners 70 yards in less than three minutes on UMR's opening possession for a touchdown. The Miner quarterback completed five passes on the opening drive, which ended with a nine-yard scoring pass to Ashton Gronewold.

The Miners held onto that lead into the second quarter, when the Bulldogs tied the score on Jimmy Sangster's eight-yard touchdown pass to John Haggerty. But the Miners responded with another touchdown drive of their own. Aided by a pass interference call on a third down play, UMR got into the end zone when Winters hit Brandon Landry for a 32-yard touchdown pass.

However, Tim Valencia's extra point was blocked, which started a string of events that led to the Bulldogs building an 11-point lead.

Southwestern got its first lead of the day when Patrick Weaver concluded an 80-yard drive with a 13-yard scoring run, then took advantage of a blocked punt in the final 30 seconds of the half to add to the lead on a 29-yard field goal by Spenser Daniel.

UMR got a defensive stop on the opening possession of the second half and then threatened to score as it drove down to the Southwestern five-yard line. However, a pair of illegal procedure penalties moved the Miners back and then UMR came away empty when Valencia missed a 32-yard field goal.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the missed field goal by driving 80 yards for another touchdown, which came on a 22-yard scoring catch by Beau Dodson to give SWOSU a 24-13 lead with 9:08 to play in the third quarter.

UMR's defense then held the Bulldogs in check and the offense scored the next nine points on a 39-yard field goal by Valencia and a nine-yard scoring pass from Winters to Landry on back-to-back possessions. However, Winters was forced into an incompletion on the two-point conversion attempt to keep the Miners behind by a 24-22 count with 10:24 to play.

Both teams went three-and-out on their next possession, then the Bulldogs used up 5:45 on a 57-yard scoring drive to build a two-possession lead. Sangster ran for a first down on a third-and-nine play to keep the drive going in its early stages, then finished it with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Weaver with just 2:19 to go.

The Miners weren't finished, however, as Winters took UMR 80 yards in just over a minute to bring it to within two again. After completing big passes to Landry and Chad Shockley (on third-and-10) to keep the drive going, he threw a five-yard scoring pass to Gronewold to make it 31-29 with 58 seconds on the clock. But the Miners were unable to recover the onsides kick, allowing the Bulldogs to run out the clock.

Winters, the NCAA Division II leader in total offense and touchdown passes, finished the afternoon with 31 completions in 60 attempts for 416 yards and four scores. Gronewold caught 11 passes for 121 yards and two scores, giving him at least one touchdown catch in 10 straight games. Landry hauled in seven passes, two for scores, for a season-best 127 yards and Shockley had a season-high six catches on the afternoon.

The Miners will return home for their next three games, starting with next Saturday's 1 p.m. game against Austin Peay at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Next week's game will be Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day which will be sponsored by Fidelity Communications.

Miner swimmers open season by placing third at Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The UMR swimming team got its season underway Saturday by finishing third at the Show-Me Showdown held at the University of Missouri.

The host Tigers won the meet, while defending NCAA Division II champion Drury finished second by 34 points over UMR, as the Miners finished with a total of 267 points. The Miners ended up 20 points ahead of Lindenwood in the tightly contested meet.

The Miners got a win in the meet from junior Matt Hug, who set a new meet record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:34.66, making the NCAA Division II B-standard and narrowly missing the automatic qualifying time of 4:34.49. Earlier in the meet, Hug finished fourth in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:43.25, which also made the B-cut.

The Miners got third-place finishes from Kyle Kammer in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 25.13 seconds and 100-back as he recorded a time of 52.89, while Matt Adams had a trio of fourth place finishes, getting them in 100-yard individual medley with a time of 53.50, the 100-breaststroke in 59.67 and 200-IM in 1:57.13. Adams also finished fifth in the 50-butterfly in a time of 23.58, while Paul Reinisch came in seventh in that event in 23.78.

UMR also had three others in the top ten in the 100-breaststroke, as Matt Hammond came in eighth place in 1:01.07, David Calcara was ninth in 1:01.33 and Bill Gaul tenth in 1:01.94.

Travis Stensby, who was fifth in the 50-backstroke in 25.28 seconds, also finished seventh in the 100-butterfly with a mark of 52.55 as did Bill Gaul in the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.19 seconds. Brian Howell came in sixth in the 50-backstroke 25.41 seconds, while Chris Scheuber came in ninth in the 100-butterfly in 52.73. Scheuber also finished ninth in the 50-butterfly in 23.97, just behind Stensby who posted a 23.95 in the 50-fly.

Dustin Spieker also posted a ninth-place finish in the 100-backstroke in 56.35, while Cameron McKay was tenth in that event in 56.80. UMR also got a tenth-place performance from freshman Andrew Trowbridge in the 200-freestyle as he posted a time of 1:46.13; later in the meet, Trowbridge took fifth in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:47.60.

The Miners' 200-yard freestyle relay team finished second as the quartet of Mark Chamberlain, Matt Adams, David Sanchez-Turner and Chris Scheuber posted a time of 1:25.62, edging Missouri by .04 seconds and falling just short of winning the race. UMR also had a third place finish in the 300-yard medley relay and in the 200-medley relay where it had a time of 1:26.53.

The next competition for UMR will take place Oct. 21 when it takes part in a four-team meet in St. Louis with Saint Louis, Lindenwood and Rose-Hulman.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- In its final meet prior to the conference championships, the UMR men's cross country team put together another strong outing with a sixth-place finish Saturday at the Border War Invitational at Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

The Miners ended up in a tie for sixth with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Lewis, one of the teams it figures to contend with at the top of the standings at the Oct. 21 conference meet that will be held on the same course that Saturday's meet was held. UMR and Lewis were the top two GLVC finishers at the meet, with Northern Kentucky next in line in 11th place.

Joffroi Holcombe led the Miner contingent with a 31st place finish as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:11. He was followed by Chris Thielker in 45th place with a time of 26:34 and Gary Black two spots later in 26:36.

UMR had Nathan Young finish in 65th place with a time of 26:57 and Chris Murray finish 80th in 27:10 to round out its top five.
