UMR quarterback Joe Winters, who earlier this season was named as the national player of the week by D2Football.com, has earned a similar award from Football Gazette for his performance in the Miners' victory over Lincoln University last weekend.
Winters, who tied Evan Gray's school record for touchdown passes in a game Saturday, earned the award from the national publication after completing 19 of 37 passes for 359 yards in just three quarters of action in the 49-7 rout of the Blue Tigers. He threw two touchdown passes in each of the first three quarters of play, beginning with a 31-yard scoring pass to Chad Shockley on UMR's first possesson followed by the first of two scoring passes to Brandon Landry later in the quarter.
Winters also had scoring passes to Nathan Binder, Ashton Gronewold and Mike Greaving in the game to increase his touchdown pass total ot 12 on the season. In addition, the 359 yards are the tenth-most in a game in school history; Winters owns three of the top 10 career passing games in his first season at UMR.
The graduate student was D2Football.com's national award winner after the Miners' season opener at Tiffin when he threw for 402 yards and four touchdowns.
The Miners will play at Morehead State Saturday.
