For the first time in the 2006 season, the University of Missouri-Rolla men's cross country team finds itself in the rankings for the NCAA Great Lakes region.
UMR is ranked seventh in the region this week on the strength of three strong outings to start the year. The Miners finished second in their season-opening meet at the University of Kansas, then won the Miner Invitational the following week. Last weekend, UMR came in sixth place out of 31 teams in the Southern Stampede held at Missouri Southern.
The six teams currently ranked ahead of UMR in the region are all ranked among the top 21 in the nation in this week's NCAA Division II rankings as conducted by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Grand Valley State from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tops the current regional rankings while Southern Indiana, sits in the fifth spot in the region and as the highest-ranked team from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Fellow GLVC member Lewis is ranked sixth in the region this week.
UMR will return to competition Sept. 30 at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.
