UMR quarterback Joe Winters, who established a new school record Saturday for the most passing yards by a quarterback in his first game as a Miner, was named as the D2Football.com "Offensive Player of the Week" for his performance in the Miners' game against Tiffin Saturday.

In the loss, Winters completed 25 of 43 passes for 402 yards and four touchdowns, while leading the Miners to five straight possessions with points in the middle of the contest. The 402 yards passing eclipsed the total of 374 accumulated by Brandon Landry in the 2004 opener against Upper Iowa; Landry, now a wide receiver for the Miners, caught two of Winters' four scoring passes.

Winters is a graduate student from Jacksonville, Fla., who came to UMR via Columbia University. He is also the first student to be admitted to UMR's master of business administration degree program.
