The UMR women's cross country and track programs will look to continue moving up the ladder in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the 2006-07 season after posting some solid efforts in the teams' inaugural year in the league. The cross country team will bank on returners Laura Ruf, Katy MacMann and Wendy Moore to lead the way, while freshmen Kierra Handley and Silvey Britton hope to fortify the Lady Miners' top five this fall.
Handley was one of the top cross country runners in the high school ranks last season. UMR will host its annual cross country meet Sept. 9 at the UMR Golf Course.
In the track season, the Lady Miners will have two returning conference champions in Becca Kueny -- who also earned All-America honors in the javelin throw -- and Sarah Zaremba in the pole vault. UMR had several other high finishers at the GLVC meets last season, which included Jamie Statler and Taylor Hahn in the pole vault, Beverly Ruedy in the middle distance events and Alycia Mordaunt in the throws.
UMR's lone home meet of the 2007 track season will be the Dewey Allgood Invitational on April 21.
